Reign was born in ChengDu,. China on March 11, 1999 to Chen RuoXuan, who was a very well-known wildlife researcher and used to work in the Chengdu Wildlife Reserve for their Panda Center. Her mother worked in the Thai embassy.
She lost her father when she was ten and after that they moved to Dallas, where her mother met her step-father and married him. Her step-father is a Korean well-known chef, and he owns restaurants. She has 4 step-brothers.
She said in a show that her relationship with her step-father initially was very bad and she hated him but eventually, they got along well. Now, they are really close. Fans who've visited his restaurants say that he only plays NCT/RoséNoir/SuperM songs and has her posters all over the place. He even gives out free food on special days like her debut date, birthdays etc.
She is Half Thai, and has family back in Thailand.
Her family calls her panda because Reign as a child was chubby, liked being alone and always in search of food.
She was casted three times by three different SM agents before she actually agreed to audition; first time in Hongkong, the second time in Dallas, and the last time, while she was in an EXO concert, a year later. The third time succeeded only because the agent promised that if she tried out they would give her signed albums and merch from EXO.

She auditioned with EXO-M's Miracles In December and did some acrobatic stunts.

Reign's first friend in her K-pop journey was actually Lucas. They were seatmates, escorted by the same agent from Hongkong to Seoul. The agent introduced them and they got along well. Later on, she asked Lucas to give Idol training a try.
During her pre-debut days, she pretended to not know Korean as a means to not get scolded. But when she had to take extra Korean language classes, she eventually started doing better so as to not need classes anymore.
Reign worked a lot before her official debut. She was introduced as an SMRookies, has OSTs in Chinese, was featured in Lay's Namanana album.
She originally wanted to be a Zoo-keeper or Vet or a Wildlife Researcher like her father.
