Four. She had exiled three men and gave orders for Rick to kill the fourth. The guilt of that didn’t weigh on her heart like the loss of her husband and son. Her family had been torn apart and she blamed herself for Reg’s death. Rick had wanted Pete gone and with good reason, but she couldn't condemn the man. Not when he played such an important role in the community. “Rick? Do it.” Deanna ran a hand across her reddened eyes and let out a sigh. She had let her pokerface fall. She felt everything in that moment as her husband bled out in her arms. It was that moment that she realized that Rick had been right. They had been living behind walls with a false sense of security. Rick’s group had been through hell. They had much to learn from the group, she understood that now.
She had been snapped out of her thoughts as a knock sounded on the door. Once again Deanna composed herself, her pokerface was back on as she wiped the fallen tears off her cheeks. She stood and maneuvered through the empty and quite house and stood in front of the front door for a moment. The woman closed her eyes in an effort to further regain her composure and let out a breath. The knocking continued and she finally opened the door.
“Rick, what can I do for you?” Deanna asked as she stepped aside, welcoming the man into her home. She hadn’t distanced herself from the community, as the leader she wasn’t allowed to. It wasn’t fair to them. They looked to her to lead, and that’s what she was going to continue to do. But she had distanced herself from the constable. She didn’t want to admit that she needed help, that the community needed to learn how to survive his way.
