Birds chirped happily outside of the window of the bedroom and the sunlight pierced through the blinds. A smile spread over Deanna’s face as she woke, a hand reaching out towards her husband’s side of the bed. She frowned at the feeling of cool sheets and the absent contact of her husband. The woman climbed out of bed and headed downstairs, the smell of recently toasted bread filling her nose. She wrapped her arms around Reg’s torso and let out a content sigh. “Good morning.” She murmured as she peered around him and to what he was preparing on the stove.
The birds, sunshine, breakfast all cast an illusion that things were normal. She supposed that inside the walls life was normal, or as normal as it could be since the dead had once again walked the earth. It had been this way since the beginning. Here dinner parties still existed, children played out in the streets, and it was partly because of the man whose arms were wrapped around. He had been the facilitating movement behind the walls and what started the community. She was incredibly proud of him.
Deanna released her hold on Reg and moved to the coffee pot and began to prepare the beverage. “Let’s eat breakfast outside today. It’s a beautiful day, lets take advantage of it.” She suggested as she pressed the start button of the machine, the coffees aroma filling the house.

“Ya know ya’ll ain’t changin’ me.”
“I know that, that’s why we aren’t going to try anymore. You can be yourself here, Daryl. We won't try to form you into someone else.”
As the woman moved over, Carl returned her smile and sat down beside her in the space she had created. “I know what it’s like to lose someone.” He sighed, he missed his mother every day, Beth too, but loss was just a part of their lives now, it always had been. “He really wants this place to work. For me and Judith. For all of us.”
“It’s a part of life we’ll never get used to, unfortunately. But that keeps us human.” Grieving, mourning, feeling. That was the difference between them and the walking dead. “It will work, I’ll make sure of it. My word might not mean much to you, but with your father’s help we will survive.”
Daryl knew she wasn’t okay, but honestly he knew he was the last person she wanted to talk with. So he figured he wouldn’t bring it up again, at least not now. When the question came he nodded at her, “– we’re fine, he’s a good guy.” He tells her that honestly believing it, Morgan seemed good and he knew Rick.
“– there’s one more thing, I… where we got stuck, it was a trap. someone or a group set it up, dozen ‘o walkers in food trucks. I dunno’ if they are still ‘round or not but, I thought ya’ should know.”
An interview with Morgan wouldn’t be necessary. The man had saved two of her recruiters. She was grateful and would grant him a place amongst the community for his actions. A man like him would be welcomed amongst the walls.
“Thank you, Daryl. I’ll make sure its position is marked down and send a few people to scout the area before anyone else is put in danger.”
“There is no such thing as a ‘safe’ zone anymore. That’s exactly why these walls are gonna come down one day, and you’re not gonna be able to do anything about it.” He leaned against the bars of the gate, long fingers wrapping around the metal steadily getting hotter underneath the summer sun. “Little pig, little pig, let me in…”
Deanna narrowed her eyes at the man in front of her. “You’re wrong, but there is no point in arguing with the likes of you.” A small smile spread over her face in defiance. She wasn’t afraid of the man in front of her. “Sorry, wolves aren’t welcomed here.”

After Reg's death, Deanna temporarily resigned from role as leader and passed on the duty to Spencer who had assured her he could handle it. She didn't doubt him, however she was worried he wouldn't be able to carry the weight of leading Alexandria on his shoulders. It wasn't a burden but leading the community at a time of need and uncertainty wouldn't be easy.
She was in no position mentally to lead the community and instead busied here self in her home. She remained out of site except for a visit to see Jessie and Tara. Avoiding the community had been easy for her. She spent what felt like days crying over the death of Reg and Aiden and when she could finally see straight again she busied herself with work. She was still competent enough to read over supply lists and the inventory of the pantry and armory. Busy work. She could do that. It took her mind off of the heartache she was feeling.
A knock came from the door, causing the older woman to let out a sigh and stand from her desk. It was probably just another casserole or baked good being kindly offered to her. She was quite surprised to see Glenn as she opened the door. "Hello, Glenn. What can I do for you?" She asked as she stepped aside and welcomed the man into her quite and empty home.

Finally, the cracks had at long last presented themselves to the leader of Alexandria, who to Rick’s joy was beginning to see things from his point of view. A small step, for sure, but a necessary one if Deanna wanted to keep people safe; their survival was paramount for a woman in her position, and it shouldn’t have taken the loss of her husband for her to see that. This was long overdue.
“You’re right,” Rick agreed, with his tone stern and his expression flat with great emphasis on how serious he was. No longer was he going to tip-toe around her, or attempt to pander to her fabricated perspective on what life within the walls should be like. The dead were still out there, the likes of Gareth, the Governor - they were abundant and ever present beyond the walls too. Playing house, listening to music? Those were luxuries, not a way of life. That’s why she needed him, because Rick understood what she wasn’t willing to accept until now; he was better suited to running this place, no matter how much he may have been reluctant to.
“That’s why this place needs a leader, not a politician. There are no ballots anymore, no bullshit campaigns - this is day to day life for us now, and bein’ diplomatic and coy isn’t goin’ to keep them safe! You need to make the hard decisions, you need to put a stop to abusive dirtbags like Pete just the way I did. It’s the only way, and if you don’t make those changes this place will fall.” His tone emerged harsh - admittedly too harsh for the point he was trying to make, but Deanna could take it. She needed to take it if she wanted this place to stay standing.
Rick stepped toward the counter and met Deanna in the eye, staring her down with an intimidating look on his face. The Python served as a halfway line between them, and Rick leaned his arm toward it and closed his palm over the grip. A glance came from the constable to the leader, and Rick inhaled sharply to prepare himself for his next sentence.
“If you can’t change… if I help you an’ you don’t stick to it – I will take this place from you, y’know that, right? I don’t want to, I don’t want anymore blood on my hands but if it’s what needs to be done - I will.” Rick hoped she would understand and that he truly had the best interests of Alexandria at heart, the same as her; he may have been harsh in suggesting a takeover against her if she couldn’t adapt, but fear was an effective motivator, and to keep Carl safe…Rick would resort to anything. He was no Governor, he was a father.
Just a few moments ago Deanna had nearly collapsed with grief in her living room, now she was staring at the gun placed on her kitchen counter. She stared at the barrel of the gun before meeting Rick’s eyes. Her moment of mourning gone and replaced with her cool and calculating nature. She narrowed her puffy eyes at him just the slightest bit.
She couldn’t help but think back to her life before the dead began to walk again. She had been a congresswoman from Ohio ready to help make decisions in the government and change politics. Reg has suggested she run for president, for which she simply shook her head, a smile wide across her face. To think that that had only been a few years ago. Now she ran a disconnected community whose main concern was finding a pasta maker for an elderly woman. No more dinner parties or extravagant casseroles, it was time to adjust to the world that they lived in. She accepted that now.
“You have my word.” Deanna knew she had to change her ways, the consequences now would be dire if she didn’t. If it came down to it, she would take a bullet over the community being slaughtered. It didn’t matter If that bullet came from Rick’s gun or another opposing force. It would be so easy for him to do it, especially now. Killing her would ensure that Rick’s ideals would be followed. The community would have no choice but to follow.
“We need to be able to trust each other.” Deanna glanced down to the gun and back to him. “That isn’t needed here. Not right now.” She leaned back into the barstool and followed her arms across her chest. Her posture straightening. “You have idea on how to keep this place safe, how to survive against the world. I’m going to listen.” She was no longer a politician, instead she was ready to be a leader, to take on hard decisions and do what was needed to make sure the community was safe.

“You didn’t have to come visit me.” Tara spoke finally. She had to break the silence, it was too quiet for her. “God, knows you have more on your plate.”
Deanna sat in the chair beside Tara’s bed. She read over a list of requested supplies as she sat in silence. She had busied herself with work to help not think of Reg and Aiden. “You’re a member of the community now, I wanted to check in on you. Make sure you’re doing alright. You seem to be in good hands.” She glanced over to Rosita and offered her a small smile.
