so i've had this question for the longest time and i've never thought to ask: do you know if daniel's age is ever alluded to in the canon of amnesia, or is it just ascended fanon that he's 23? i've always seen him as around thirty, but being in the vast minority makes me feel like there's something i've missed.
Daniel’s age isn’t alluded to at all. I suppose there are certain context clues, such as the Hazel business, and his position in the British Museum, but I’ve always taken these to place Daniel at his early-to-mid thirties. That’s how I write him, anyway. He does have some ‘younger’ mannerisms and quotes—though mind you, I don’t believe there there is an age limit on immaturity—but I’ve always read them as a combination of his vulnerable desperation at that point, and Entitled Imperial complex. (Plenty of markers to that attitude in the Algeria entries. It’s a very distinct brand, identifiable. Especially prevalent among a certain class of Londoner, even—especially—today.) Although, seeing those mannerisms as ‘younger’ is in itself presuming thirtysomething is an older and wiser age range than it is in reality.
I do feel that the fanon thing is way too young, for my taste, and possibly is just a reflection of the younger age of the fandom base—but you know, nobody’s right and nobody’s wrong here. It’s all good, and the more, and more diverse content, the better, in such a small fandom! This is all just my read on it, and as valid as anyone’s.
