Have you seen the video "40 Years of Goth Style (in under 4 minutes)"? If not, I recommend you to watch it, especially since you are an elder Goth, your opinion about it would be really interesting I think :$
It was an interesting video, and there were things about it I liked. (Whooo, batcave and romantic goth!) But ...
I was perplexed by what they were calling “deathrock” -- none of the deathrockers I’ve ever known would have recognized that hairstyle, for one thing.
Um, steampunk isn’t really part of the goth subculture. A cousin to it, sure! People cross over between them all the time, yes! But they’re two separate things.
Same goes for the “pinup” section. Pinup is completely separate from goth. Gothabilly borrows a lot from pinup fashion, but is (again!) a separate thing.
Aaand the same thing for Lolita, dammit.
So, lots of different separate subcultures were getting squashed together under the goth label. Hmmm. That made me raise my eyebrows a lot.
Perhaps I’m just tired, but the video seemed to be trying to give the impression that goth styles have evolved in a linear manner, which is SO far from the truth that it’s kind of ridiculous.
There were so many more goth styles they could have covered! Where are the corporate goths? The renn faire goths? The military and/or industrial goths?
So, I respect what they’re trying to do, but I kinda-sorta disagree with the execution.
