Every time I read/hear this I think of that painting*, so this year I finally made a meme of it.
*Detail of The Execution of Torrijos and his Companions on the Beach at Málaga by Antonio Gisbert, 1888.
Ned Coates: is this a barbarian warrior?
You ever think about Ned Coates who knew John Keel and then there comes this impostor claiming to be him and he's all wrong and angrier and scowling and everyone is captivated by his every word. He comes in, takes over and walks around the place and picks it apart, turns it around 180°. People seem to like him.
But... He is not Keel. The name isn't his to bear. Who does he think he is? What side is he playing? Winder? Snapcase? Are all his actions a farce? Another of his lies, to trap those who don't know better?
Where's John Keel, his John Keel?
Ned sees Carcer, and he sees what he is doing, and he sees what the so-called Keel is doing.
And he knows which is wrong. Is this betrayal? What would Keel think, Ned supporting a man stealing his name?
But it doesn't matter. They all die the same.
And maybe... Maybe this man isn't Ned's Keel, but he will fight beside him anyway.
It’s the Glorious 25th of May, or as I like to call it, Missing Ned Coates Day
Behind the Times
Inspired by this amazing theory from @nonasuch, I have written a fic about Night Watch from Discworld in which a twenty-year-old Young Sam is transported back in time and ends up filling the shoes of one Ned Coates in the weeks leading up to the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May.
I present to you: Behind the Times.
So far, 3/36 chapters have been posted!
"I don't want to die," said Ned, "and I don't intend to. This is stupid. There's not a dozen of you. What can you do? All that stuff about 'keeping the peace' -- it's rubbish, lads. Coppers do what they're told by the men in charge. It's always like that. What'll you do when the new captain comes in, eh? And who're you doing this for? The people? They attacked the other houses, and what's the Night Watch ever done to hurt them?"
"Nothing," said Vimes.
"There you have it, then."
"I mean the Watch did nothing, and that's what hurt them," said Vimes.
Terry Pratchett, Night Watch
Countdown to the Glorious 25th, Day 5: Ned Coates, one of the actual revolutionaries.
Ned was a really interesting character in Night Watch, and he's one of the folks whose story in the original timeline that I'd be most interested to know. He wouldn't have been driven away from Treacle Mine Road by a man impersonating his old sergeant from Pseudopolis, so did he succeed in radicalising his fellow Watchmen? Was he Keel's right hand man when the barricades went up? Or did he play some other role in the events of the Glorious Revolution? There's a lot of interesting questions with Ned that are a lot of fun to think about.
