I got my yearly flu shot yesterday and gave out a bunch of them today! Which was my first ever procedure on a real patient! It was so cool, I didn't realize it would be so hard to break the skin with a needle, so I was definitely way too gentle the first time but then I just got into a rhythm and ended up doing sooo many pretty quickly! I had another first though... my first needle stick 😅 I was trying to uncap the needle gently, but it was really hard and slipped and caught my finger. No biggie because it was a clean needle and wasn't deep at all, but still not what I'd hoped for during my first time actually using needles. Pro tip: hold the syringe in one hand, the cap in the other, and pull the cap away. Don't try to push it off with the tips of your fingers like I did. But hey, you live and learn. Now I know, and least I don't have a 3rd year write up for the same mistake.

So I pricked my finger with a needle at work while suturing up a man... my boss just told me to spray some bleach on it and put a bandaid on it and then left.... uhmmmmmmm... I should probably get blood work done right?

Have you ever had a needlestick?

None that I’ve had to report. That is, none that broke the skin. I’ve poked myself a few times while sewing up vaginas (it’s dark in there), but never so much as broke a glove.

I spent most of last evening in A&E last night

after waiting around for hours they took a load of blood tests (so many that my arm RAN OUT OF BLOOD. I had to jiggle it round a bit to get the blood pumping again). And then they gave me a hepatitis B shot which actually killed me, it was so painful and when he pulled the needle out i spurted blood in the doctors face. He was slightly shocked about that. And then I had a tetanus shot.

So far all I know is that my liver and kidneys seem to be functioning ok. Which is a good thing.

But today I have two very sore, achy arms and a banging headache, and I'm running late for work as I can't drag myself out of bed.

Yesterday I did the worst thing possible in my job

I got what is known as a 'needle stick injury'/

Which is basically when you cut yourself with a used needle. I didnt just cut myself though, I impaled my hand to the point where the needle was scraping against bone.

So now I need to have a load of blood tests to see if I've caught anything.
