Japanese Encephalitis is examiners favorite. It is a frequently asked Topic repeated multiple times. It is a mosquito borne encephalitis caused by a group B arbovirus. It is transmitted by Culicine mosquitoes.
It is a zoonotic disease infecting mainly animals and incidentally man. Endemic in Korea and recently in India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.Out breaks have been reported from the states of AP, Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka and Kerala
Pigs have been incriminated as major vertebrate hosts, they do not manifest the disease, but circulate the virus so that mosquitoes get infected and can transmit the virus to man.
Pigs are considered as amplifiers of the virus. Cattle and buffaloes may also get infected, but not natural hosts of JE virus.
