AU: Soulmates - Seeing Color
Hitoshi Shinsou
You give the handle on the screwdriver a final twist and sit back with a satisfied smile. The mask is perfect—your current magnum opus. The programming, wiring, and placing of the plates could be a bit cleaner, but the piece will function as required (plus you were on a time crunch here!). Your eyebrows scrunch together as you examine your tech, you have an hour… should you paint it? Add a bit of pizzazz? That’s what those hero-class kids are into right?
But you didn’t know anything about the person this is for… Mr. Aizawa just asked Mr. Majiima to delegate someone to build this, gave rough measurements and blueprints. Without details about the hero in-question, you wouldn’t feel comfortable giving it any personalized flair. One assignment down and a million more to go. “Mr. Maijima!” You call the teacher on the other side of the workroom, the man in question is trying to do damage control on another one of Hatsume’s creations that had faulty wiring. Power Loader didn’t turn around despite your attempts to catch his attention; sighing, you push yourself away from your work-bench with your invention in-hand and walk out of the lab just before a small explosion goes off.
“HATSUME!”
You walk a bit slower, the longer you were gone that meant that Power Loader would have more time to come back to a reasonable level with his temper. And you have absolutely no desire to be there to witness the phenomenon. You reach the teacher’s office with relative ease and walk inside, attempting to peer over forms to find the disheveled Pro-Hero you were seeking. “Mr. Aizawa?”
The teacher leans back in his chair and you spot him. “Ah!” You scurry over and begin speaking quickly. “I have the voice modulator piece you wanted, measurements and all—even so I made it so that you can loosen and tighten it—I didn’t color it or anything because I didn’t know what the person would want. But! If they wanted color or glitter or something I can do—” Aizawa raises a single hand to stem the flow of words.
“It’s no good telling me all this. Take this to Hitoshi Shinsou from class 1-C and tell him anything he needs to know about using it.”
\You blink. “O-oh, uh ok… Wait did you say class 1-C? Do you mean B?”
“If I meant B, I would have said so.” The irritation in his voice is badly hidden and he turns back to what he was doing at his desk. You promptly leave the office; bottom lip being worried between your teeth. You’re not really sure who this Shinsou guy is or what his quirk is either, what if the piece didn’t work the way it needed to?
Eventually (and unfortunately) you reach the door of class 1-C. “Ok, just breathe and ask for him—easy. Simple. Right.” You knock lightly and the lecturing from the room pauses. “Excuse me.” You step inside and without looking at the class you speak directly to the teacher, Cementoss. “I need to see Hitoshi Shinsou, Power Loader sent me.”
The Pro-Hero nods once and turns. “Shinsou.”
“Yes, sir.” Someone stands.
You retreat into the hallway without looking at the student who had stood. Swallowing with difficulty, you hold the invention in slightly trembling hands. The door in front of you opens once more and a boy steps outside. You meet his eyes and all courage fails you, social interaction never had been your thing… You hold the mask out silently, still staring at him. His eyes flit down to the piece. A beat—then he takes it. “Thanks.”
“…no problem.” You practically whisper back, still feeling your hands trembling.
“So… how does it work?” He asks, obviously fishing as though he expected you to tell him without prompting.
Idiot! “O-oh! Right! Uhm, so there’s a small knob on the side that you pull out slightly to activate the modulator, and—” You step forward to point out the object in question. “And then you turn it to whichever frequency you need. There are… uh small buttons along where the jawline is, the closer to the chin the lower the voice. The knob helps you with the individual pitch for that setting…” You pause. “…but if someone has a stutter or a rasp—you’ll have to imitate that yourself. Only so much one piece of support equipment can do. Oh, and um doing female voices might be harder for you—girl voices tend to have a… lilt? A lilt to them.” You scratch your head, scrunching your face. “I mean, you’ll get the pitch but some of it is gonna be down to you. Someone might not immediately notice but they will eventually. So, you’ll only get so many words out of them…”
The boy just continues to gaze at you, his expression not betraying any of his thoughts. This puts you on edge even more and you go to speak again to fill the silence. “Is it too complicated? Or not precise enough? I—I can make whatever moderations you need. This is just a prototype and I only had a week to work on it—”
“You built this?”
“Uh yeah.”
“In a week?”
“…yeah?”
His expression shifts into a slightly bemused and his gaze drops down to the mask. “It’s impressive,” He looks back up at you, “and exactly what I need.” He holds out a hand. “What’s your name?”
“Oh!” You give him your name and clasp his hand in your own. “Nice to meet you—” but the words die in your throat because your world just exploded. You stumble backward slightly. You blink to clear your vision and surely enough, it’s not your eyes playing tricks on you. There’s… color. It’s seemed wrong—the doors aren’t… is that red? “What the—?” You look to the boy next to you in utter confusion. This couldn’t be right His hair is… purple.
But Shinsou seems as nonplused as you are. His gaze flits between the door, his clothes, the mask you and the floor so fast that he might make himself dizzy. He could see it too, clearly.
You try to think of something to say… but nothing comes to your mind. In movies, two soulmates meet accidentally at a bookshop or in a park and it’s delightfully romantic and serendipitous. But in a high school? In the middle of the day when you’re in the work uniform, ink smears on your face and arms? This couldn’t be more unromantic. So, you finally say the only thing that comes to mind, “Sorry.”
Shinsou blinks in surprise. “I was just about to say that.”
You grin and rub the back of your neck. “You don’t have to.”
“Then why did you?”
“Because I—”
“Don’t look like the movies? Well neither do I—hell I’m running off 4 hours of sleep.”
“Same here.” You chuckle.
You gaze at one another; shy smiles and uncertainty abound. Your worlds now full of color.
