Tragedy on Derby Day

Yesterday, while millions watched Orb win the 2013 Kentucky Derby, a former Derby competitor died

Nehro, who finished second behind Animal Kingdom in the 2011 Derby, fell gravely ill on the morning of May 4, eventually succumbing to colic en route to a clinic

The five-year-old son of Mineshaft also boasted second place finishes in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, as well as the Grade 3 Pimlico Special last year

Trainer Steve Asmussen called Nehro a "quality animal" and noted that "he was loved by everyone in the barn", including owner Ahmed Zayat. Zayat, who proved his devotion to his animals throughout last year's Paynter ordeal, was "deeply saddened".
