blue gaze trails from the ceiling to hers, cheek coming to rest against the matress they both lay on. " did you ever have longer hair, yu? should I also cut my hair? why did you cut your hair? it looks nice, super nice! but would it look nice on me? "
It’s hot, as the summer tends to be in that small space before it begins to die into autumn. Yuyu finds herself watching the portable fan, around, around, around.Kinda like the girls beside her, yeah? Huh. The heat must be gettin’ to her. She rolls over, languid and half-falling across Nejire as she does, but getting velcro-caught together by mutual sweaty-stick is fine, it’s nice to meet eyes with her.
“Nah, don’t cut your hair. I like it how it is. I just sort of, well…It was long when I was little. I used to braid it all the time,” Nejire always had a million questions, but Yuyu had a million answers. She would tackle ‘em one at a time, even if it could be hard to do that without a few dozen more questions cropping up on the way, But she was patient, she always had time. Yuyu smiled, “But I got tired of it. The thing with archery is that you have to keep your hair completely tamed or tied down for safety.”She rises a finger, wiggling it near Nejire’s forehead to simulate hair doing the same, “It can get in your eyes or throw off your perception-and subsequently your aim. Or, even worse, you can accidentally notch it in your arrow, or get it tangled in your bow. And that hurts a lot.”
Her finger prods Nejire’s forehead, sooping back to pull up an actual strand this time.
“So I got tired of having it so long and pulling it all the time. So I cut it! And I think I look a lot better this way. It saves me a lot of time, too!” It was fluid, the switch between questions and topics. She let the river run one more waterfall, one more pool for them to rest in.
“I don’t think you’d look bad with short hair. I’m just really fond of what you have now, I think. You like it a lot, too, and I worry you’d regret cutting it. But if you did? I’m sure you’d still look really good.”
