This is apparently the year of anniversaries. Happy 10 year music career anniversary to Nelli Matula, who dropped a new song today to celebrate. That song is Petshop, feat Olga and Senya, a remake of Nelli's iconic debut, Lemmikki.

That Lemmikki song led to an interview, in which Nelli was asked who would be her pet and she answered Robin, which Robin saw, and ended up eventually inviting her on board for the song Hula Hula. This was one early turning point for her, because Hula Hula was a hit, making it her first song on the singles chart and first 1st place on the radio chart.

I've heard several people now say Nelli Matula's Hitaammin hautaan reminds them of Kuumaa's Ylivoimainen.

My first reaction is very confused, because to me the two songs don't sound particularly similar to me beyond being pop. Not to even mention taht these two artists don't appear to have much overlap in terms of production and writing. Kuumaa are fairly self suffiecient in music, with Jonas Olsson and Okko Saastamoinen being the most frequent credits alongside the band. For Nelli, there seems to be mostly big rap (Iso H, Kiro, RZY) and pop names (Minna Koivisto, Vilma Alina, Jurek). And the songs in question have no overlap in writing nor production.

And then I realized maybe it's just that people don't really have a frame of reference for Finnish Pop in particular, and these are two artists who have a very typical Finnish Pop sound to them, and so for foreigners they're maybe similar because of that. Thoughts?
