I've seen people defend what Timothee said by saying "the only people who care about ballet and opera are rich, white, cishet snobs" as some kind of progressive statement, and I'm sorry but this is literally just "America has no culture" all over again.
There are people of color and queer people, both then and now, who have been composers, choreographers, and directors for ballet and opera shows, as well as performers, and there are troupes that uplift and highlight them or sometimes entirely consist of them. I partook in a choir, which was part of my local opera company, where we got to learn cultural songs of varying backgrounds. Many songs were gospel, others were Latin music, etc. It was beautiful. The people at the opera company were talented, unique, and diverse in their own ways, They also had plus-size and openly trans singers.
If you're gonna dismiss two entire art forms as just "all just white people, ugh" while conveniently ignoring people of color and LGBT+ folks who have been using those mediums to express their emotions, cultures, and stories, you're the problem. (Obviously not referring to you Nelly.)
Opera and ballet definitely have some elitist and racist roots, just like almost all performing arts. But in modern times, the industries have definitely taken steps to rectify this. Hell, Porgy and Bess is an opera that had an all black cast IN 1934. And Porgy and Bess is a staple of opera. I barely know anything about opera and I know that one. And according to this article, the first openly queer character in an opera appeared back in 1935! And we've gotten more representation since then. Drag is considered a critical element of the history of ballet! Queer people and people of color have always been a part of ballet and opera. And even if people aren't familiar with the history of the art forms, have these people never heard of Misty Copland??? Famous black ballet dancer??? I don't know a lot about ballet, and even I know Misty Copeland exists. It's so weird to argue that ballet is *only* white when Misty is so famous, idk. You could argue that ballet is *overwhelmingly* white, and it needs to get more diverse, but that is a different conversation.
While I'm here, I'd also like to bring up people defending Timothee by saying he was talking about accessibility??? I've seen a lot of people arguing that he was trying to make the point that movies are more accessible to people than opera and ballet. It's true that not everyone can afford to go see an opera or a ballet live. But a lot of local and community theaters offer free or reduced price tickets to people. Even in New York City, they have the 30 under 30 program so younger people can see the ballet for only 30 dollars. The metropolitan opera and many other opera companies have streaming programs so you can watch operas from the comfort of home. PBS Great Performances exists and they do opera and ballet performances!!! Like literally all the time!!! Opera and ballet are not nearly as inaccessible anymore. They're not only limited to rich people. And if Tim WAS trying to make that point, why did he specifically say that no one cares about opera or ballet anymore??? The direct quote out of his mouth is "I don't wanna be working in ballet, or opera... things where it's like, "hey, keep this thing alive even though nobody cares about it anymore"". He literally says that he thinks no one cares about opera or ballet. And within context, he said that in a conversation about keeping movie theaters/cinema alive. WHAT does ANY of that have to do with accessibility to the arts???? "No one cares about ballet or opera" ≠ "ballet and opera are more inaccessible to people than movies". Those are different and unrelated statements. If no one cares about going to see the opera or the ballet, then why does it matter that tickets are expensive. And why, after he says that no one cares about opera and ballet, did he say "I just lost 14 cents in viewership"(that's also a direct quote!) if he was talking about accessibility. Think people. I don't understand why people wanna go to bat for this man so bad istg.
We need to stop giving bro a mic. Just a few months ago, he said that childless women have "bleak" lives and that we're only here to procreate. Let's just all stop letting him talk. PLEASE.
