Nkosi Mandela speaks on apartheid and the Nakba

Upholding the legacy of Malcolm X and commemorating the Palestinian Nakba, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela — grandson of Nelson Mandela — spoke to a gathering at San Francisco State University on May 19. Mandela was on a tour of the U.S. commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Nakba. Nakba is an Arabic word meaning “catastrophe” that refers to the 1948 expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes upon the formation of the settler-colonial state of Israel.

RIP Nelson Mandela

While I never met him, or shook his hand, or sat down and conversed with him for an hour or so, I had the privilege to do this when I visited South Africa this past summer:

Walked where he walked.

Heard what he heard.

Saw what he saw.

Lived for a few moments, where he lived.

Learned about what he has done for his people.

See how loved he was by many.

I do not just grieve for his loss, I also grieve for the people of South Africa.

Whose loving words, cards, flowers, balloons, covered the whole of his get well wall.

For the love and devotion I could see in their eyes all around me.

I grieve for them, and I celebrate them, as well as Ta Ta Madiba's life. For it wasn't always easy, but it was one he chose, and never looked back with regret.

I hope he found his final peace, and can now be the guardian angel those people deserve.
