waaaaah okay. instead of picking one fic i decided to pick a... sort of theme/motif that i notice appears in a lot of my fics. which is like... the idea of happiness or hope being something you have to hold onto for dear life. like, sometimes even physically cling to. when the negative feelings are overwhelming and it feels like they're all you can feel but you want more than that. like the feeling of hanging off a cliff and you know you can't let go. idk sajdbfksjd if that makes any sense but. i have some examples
Say Something, Chapter 3:
If Adrien had felt empty before, now he was a bottomless chasm. If he’d thought he’d hit rock bottom, now he knew there was no bottom, just an infinite distance to fall. He needed something to grab onto. Something to tether him. But Ladybug backed away when he stepped towards her. [...] He leaned his forehead against the door, feeling it shake slightly. Or maybe it was just him trembling as he pressed his hands against the wood, still searching for anything solid he could hold onto.
all of your flaws and all of my flaws (are laid out one by one):
The way her cheeks reddened answered the question for him, and he smiled as she turned around to fumble through her dresser. All the conflicting feelings that still swarmed inside him threatened to rip that smile away, but he fought them off with all he had, not caring if the effort shattered him to pieces. Marinette was worth clinging to happiness for.
The Uncertainty Principle:
And he knew that the edge of the cliff he perched on could crumble at any minute. That the solid ground he felt in this moment was a delicate thing. That he was still a hair’s width away from falling. He still had no idea where they were going. Where he was going. But for the first time in a while, he could see the possibility that things would get better. And he clung to it as tightly as he could.
talk to you through the Christmas lights:
He was glad the fence was between them, or he feared he might have run to her. He feared she might run to him. Instead, she took a single, slow step out of the shadows, extending her hand. It was close enough for him to take, if he wanted. He would have to let go of his grip on the fence, though, and he wasn’t certain that it wasn’t the only thing holding him upright. Then he looked back into her eyes, and he didn’t have to think. He grabbed her hand in one of his, worrying his grip was too tight, but unwilling to loosen his fingers. Her eyes widened, then softened. She reached up her other hand, too, sandwiching it in both of hers. She looked down at their hands, and Chat found the tension in his fingers easing. She had him, now. He could relax.
