On July the 9th, Sudan ceased to be the biggest country in Africa as South Sudan gained its independence and officially became the 193rd, and youngest, nation on earth.
Some might mourn the division of Sudan, formerly the biggest country in Africa, but as Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir conceded, the will of the people in the south had to be respected to avoid a return to armed conflict [the south had been trying to break away for decades, resulting in the continent's longest running civil war].
M.I.C.T. initiated the powerful Sudan Votes Music Hopes project in 2010, which started out as a cassette handed out across Sudan, compiling artists from all over the country, and encouraging the Sudanese people to make a mark on their future by voting. The project involved the likes of Emmanuel Jal, who has since been remixed on the successful SVMH RMXD001 EP, released in 2010 on Innervisions, and featuring remixes by Henrik Schwarz and The Knife’s Olof Dreijer.
This EP is a small contribution to Sudanese music, but a contribution we hope will expand its reach, and bring attention to the situation on the ground.
