Today’s compilation:
Spank the Nun 1990 Alternative Rock / Hard Rock / Blues-Rock / Neo-Rockabilly / Garage Rock
Pretty decent early 90s sampler from the New Jersey-based Skyclad Records here. Can't say that I know all that much about this particular label or the many bands who were on it, but they seem to have been open to a lot of different strains of rock music, which comes through in this CD.
Now, I'm not in love with most of these tracks, but a solid chunk of them, I think, are still pretty good. For example, I'm not going to put it in the list of highlights down below, but from a technical standpoint, Krewmen's "The Hell Train" is definitely an impressive piece of speedy neo-rockabilly, especially when it gets to its solo portions.
But the two best songs on this album, in my estimation, are the ones that come back-to-back at the end. And it might just be a coincidence, but in this album that's primarily dominated by late 80s rock music, these are the only two tracks that actually fall outside of that decade. Davis, California quartet The Popealopes deliver a sweet piece of anthemic 1990 alternarockin' power pop in a song called "Violet," and from UK quartet The Only Ones comes a dry-witted punky bit of live 1977 hard rock called "Why Don't You Kill Yourself."
Other songs on this album certainly have some nice bits to 'em, and if you're more inclined towards blues-rock and rockabilly, you might think more highly of this album than I do, but those last two tunes seem to be this release's most complete songs from start to finish.
Also, given the...album art...I expected this to be a bit more subversive and weird, but it’s not; it’s really just a garden variety of different rock tunes. Still a couple sweet goodies from a pair of bands I'd never heard of before, though.
