The Princesse of Broglie

The Princesse de Broglie (1825–1860), who adopted the courtesy title 'Princesse'. Born Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn, she married Albert de Broglie, the future 28th prime minister of France, in 1845. Pauline was 28 at the time of the painting's completion. She was highly intelligent and widely known for her beauty, but she suffered from profound shyness and the painting captures her melancholia. Pauline contracted tuberculosis in her early 30s and died in 1860 aged 35. Although Albert lived until 1901, he was heartbroken and did not remarry.

Description

The portrait depicts Maria Amalia of Austria (1746-1804), daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Duchess of Parma and Piacenza from 1769, having married, after long diplomatic negotiations, the young Don Ferdinand of Bourbon.

Jacques-Louis David painted this self-portrait while imprisoned at the Hôtel des Fermes for having supported the Robespierreans. It was his third and last self-portrait.

Angelica Kauffman -- Self portrait (an old fashioned selfie if you like!)

Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA (30 October 1741 – 5 November 1807), usually known in English as Angelica Kauffman, was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. She was one of the two female founding members of the Royal Academy in London in 1768. She is considered to be one of the great British artists of the 18th century. She died in 1807 and was honoured by being given the most lavish funeral procession for an artist since Raphael. Just think how many artists Rome has supplied us with, too! Under the direction of the sculptor, Antonio Canova Angelica's funeral procession laid her to rest. gallery | original | edit
