omg funniest video yet.
As promised, here is my new track "King"
big fucking 808 kicks, nasty leads and a drunk spaniard.
props to my little brother for the album art!
lets have a little fun!
so, I just finished that track today! I'm pretty happy with it. Really the biggest problem with it in my mind is that it's not very "musical" - there's really only one note in the whole track...>.>
Often, it seems like tracks like that make up for the lack of musicality with more complex vocal samples, but I didn't have any of those either, so I'm worried that it came out a little boring. Soundwise, I think it came out really well though! edit: definitely realize listening to it now, that some drum fills would have really taken this track to the next level.
the other night, I watched this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVQ8c19unnM
which is a lecture by ill.Gates about how to become a better creative person and how to dedicate yourself and how to be more productive. I found it fascinating and super helpful, and because of it, I think I want to study the science of creativity and productivity this semester. It also helped explain why it's so fucking difficult to write music after a day of programming, and how to deal with that!
On another note, I definitely need to start practicing DJing for real. School is getting very close and I want to start DJing parties and I definitely want to play at Halloween / Spring Jam.
Where am I going next: I'm gonna spend some time tomorrow night organizing my sample library and working some sound design - I really don't have any really good bass synths in my arsenal yet. I also need to clean up my synth library, I'm sure there are plenty of presets in there that I made that I'm never going to use. I think I'm gonna keep working with moombahton for a while...it's a lot of fun :D Although I do really want to experiment with something along the lines of Vargulf again, because that stuff is fucking brutal when it's done right.
Last thought: When working on LetsHaveFun, I wrote several drum patterns and drop leads before I started arranging the song at all, which was very beneficial. However, I think next time, I'm gonna come up with a few drum patterns, then come up with a melody or two (possibly with the help of Scale MIDI effect?) and THEN work on the actual drop based on that. Hopefully that way, I'll get something a little more emotive and musical.
Here it is! "Vargulf" is done. For anyone who doesn't already know, the title comes from the show Hemlock Grove on Netflix. I had just finished watching it when I started writing this track, and I couldn't stop thinking about it, so this track is heavily inspired by it. It's a pretty heavy minimal dubstep track with some trap influences. I wrote all about it in the post below!
EASTERN SUMMER
it's done and on soundcloud! wooo! I'm really happy with the way it came out - more so than anything I've ever done before. Before I go into my longwinded bullshit about the process of making and what I learned, etc...Here's the track!
Okay so here we go. Things I'm really happy with:
- I think I got a really good sound on this track. I think I did a pretty solid job of mixing it - when I was listening to it at my house on different speakers and headphones, it seemed to stand up to other pro tracks reasonably well, which I'm really pumped about. I think I did a better job of eqing and placing sounds than I really ever have.
- I think I captured the mood and ambience I was looking for pretty well, although I guess I can't know for sure since I created it! I'll have to talk to people about it.
- I'm happy with the way I varied things throughout the track. In terms of the notes, most of the song is pretty similar, but I think I did good job of doing different stuff with what I had.
- In the past I had just made a group of two or three tracks and just labeled them "Background" - this time I had a few different synths that I picked out especially, and made sure they all had a place and a time, which I think helped with the mixing a lot.
- I made most of the synths I used, and I'm really happy with the way they came out.
Things I want to do better:
- It's not quite as loud as I would like - that's not SUPER important though.
- The drum track could be more interesting and varied. One thing that I liked about Ah Shit was that the drums never did the exact same thing twice.
- The transitions between parts aren't bad...but they could be a lot better.
- The drop doesn't hit quite as hard as I would like.
In general, I'm pretty happy with this track. Now really it's a matter of improving lots of little small things like transitions, EQ'ing, drum programming, etc. And not getting too cocky.
Creatures!
Here it is!

I finally finished "Creatures". I hope you all enjoy it! I think this one is actually put together well enough that I'm going to put some effort into spreading it around. Now on to start my next project!
small tooting of my own horn
Damn Kids just came up on my shuffle and I actually want to listen to it! Making music that I actually really want to listen to is the first step. :D
