August: Osage County (2013, John Wells)
28/02/2024
August: Osage County is a 2013 film directed by John Wells, based on Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County.
Violet Weston is an elderly woman who lives in Osage County, Oklahoma with her husband Beverly. Harsh and corrosive, the woman suffers from a tumor in her mouth: nevertheless her husband remained by her side.
Steve immediately tries to become close to Jean, discovering that she uses illegal substances such as marijuana.
Following this, Karen has an argument not with Steve but with Barbara, accusing her of being insensitive and cynical, who, in tears, returns to Florida with the man, aware that her relationship with Steve, who in those days she had continued to magnify everyone, it would not be his last mistake; the following morning Jean also abandons her mother to leave for Colorado, with Bill.
Ivy therefore leaves her mother's house, deciding to stay with "Little" Charles since, due to a previous hysterectomy, she could not have children to whom she could possibly pass on hereditary defects.
The direction is by John Wells, while George Clooney, Jean Doumanian, Harvey Weinstein, Steve Traxler, Grant Heslov produce the film, which was distributed by The Weinstein Company.
Renée Zellweger and Andrea Riseborough were considered, but Riseborough was forced to withdraw due to prior commitments, and was replaced by Juliette Lewis.
Chloë Grace Moretz auditioned for the role of Jean Fordham, but the part was given to Abigail Breslin.
Filming occurred in Bartlesville and Pawhuska, Oklahoma and Los Angeles between October 16 and December 8, 2012.
In Italian cinemas, however, it was distributed starting from 30 January 2014.
Giant Microbes: plushie organisms and cells!
“GIANTmicrobes is a toy company based in Stamford, Connecticut founded by Drew Oliver in 2002. GIANTmicrobes manufactures designer plush stuffed toys resembling microbes, including human pathogens such as E. coli and the Epstein-Barr virus. Each 5-7 inch long toy is based on electron micrographs of the real microbe, thus the toys represent an approximate million-fold magnification of the actual organisms and can serve as educational toys or mascots. The scientific theme of the toys combined with their friendly looks gave them an appeal to both children and adults.
Each microbe includes a printed card with fun, educational and fascinating facts, with a selection of over 150 different microbes and cells. They’re available in four sizes: 5-inch Originals, 12-inch XL, 2-foot Gigantics, 3-inch Minis in gift boxes & keychains. They are perfect gift for students, scientists, teachers, health professionals & anyone with a healthy sense of humor!”

Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN): Description of an uncommon entity by Babatope Lanre Awosusi in Journal of Clinical Case Reports Medical Images and Health Sciences
Background: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is an uncommon tumor of the appendix with attendant risk of serious complications.1 It can present with abdominal pain and distention, vomiting, a palpable mass, intestinal obstruction, weight loss, and sometimes intussusception. Other uncommon forms of presentation include hematuria, ureteral obstruction, hydronephrosis, and urinary tract infection.1
Case presentation: A 47-year-old female presented with three days of constant dull right upper and lower quadrant abdominal pain associated with nausea, vomiting, and bloating. She had a similar episode two months prior with intermittent right lower quadrant pain, nausea, and vomiting for two days. There was associated low-grade fever. On examination, she had mild tenderness in the right lower quadrant with no guarding or rebound tenderness. Laboratory investigations showed only leukocytosis. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen done revealed a dilated fluid-filled appendix measuring 1.8 cm in diameter. Laparoscopic appendectomy was done and histopathological examination of the specimen showed features consistent with a low-grade mucinous neoplasm of the appendix with acellular mucin dissecting the muscularis and serosa. Histology did not show peritoneal spread but patient still had post-operative clinical and radiologic follow-up with no adverse event reported.
Conclusion: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are lesions of the appendix that can rupture and lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei with risk of mortality. If it is confined to the appendix, surgical management will suffice with clinical follow-up and imaging if the margins involve acellular mucin or neoplastic epitheli.

My sister had surgery to remove an appendix, an ovary and stray endometriosis.
Histology shows a little bit of mucoid cancer in her appendix. That is quite rare.
Her update in her own words:
Met with my oncologist. He ordered a CT scan and cancer marker test. I will undergo laparoscopic diagnostic and HIPEC (heated chemo cocktail shaker) procedures.
Laparoscopic diagnostic to check for more LAMN.
HIPEC to remove any stray LAMN cells.
He was very good at explaining LAMN (low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm). LAMN spreads as mucin (snot) in the abdomen. Damn LAMN.
Some people have so much mucin that they appear pregnant.
Long story short ****y has a little LAMN”🎶🎵
