Fresh Pair of Eyes: Chapter Three
It’s been about a week since the convenience store incident and a week since she last saw the man who saved her, Rowoon, was it? Despite the fact that Kiyoko lived in the building directly opposite of the boys’ company building, she hasn’t been able to catch a glimpse of them. “What.. do they live in the building twenty-four seven?” She muttered to herself as she let go of the curtains and turned around from the window, which offered a clear view to the front doors of FNC Entertainment. For the past week, Kiyoko stood by the window looking out for him. She felt regretful that she wasn’t able to utter her thanks to Rowoon for helping her that night. “Ah whatever, I shouldn’t be wasting my time like this. If I see him, I’ll see him.” Kiyoko muttered to herself and began getting ready for her doctor’s appointment. Upon exiting the front door of her apartment building, the slightly chilled air gently caressed her skin, to the delight of Kiyoko. It was finally spring, and she truly enjoyed the season. The cherry blossoms painted the almost dull looking streets of Seoul to make it look a lot livelier; it was pretty to her eyes. It was as if the cherry blossoms existed to emit a positive vibe, something that Kiyoko definitely needed. She barely made it five steps out her door before someone called her out, “hey kid!” Kiyoko turned around to the sound of that to see the man, Rowoon, standing at the entrance of the opposite building, leaning his entire frame against the bricked wall. “You?” Kiyoko asked, startled. Rowoon made his way towards her, “you left this,” he pulled out a necklace from his jean pocket. “Wait that’s..” Kiyoko instantly reached for the spot where her necklace was always supposed to be. How did she not even realize that it was missing? “Yeah, you dropped it on the rooftop. Probably while you were asleep.” Rowoon explained before passing her her necklace. “Thanks.” She simply muttered to him before turning around to make her way to the hospital. “Oh and,” she started, turning back around to face him, “thanks, for that night, for helping me.” “You’re welcome.” Rowoon said, giving her a small smile. Kiyoko returned the smile before turning on her heel to continue on her way. Rowoon made his way back to his company building, not before turning around to look at the retreating back of Kiyoko.
“So Kiyoko, did you encounter any more of your breakdowns after the last session?” Doctor Shim questioned Kiyoko. “Not this week, no.” Kiyoko replied. “Did you turn to cigarettes or alcohol again in this past week?” The doctor asked again as she wrote everything down in her notebook. “Yes..” Kiyoko answered softly. “Kiyoko, I’ve told you how those weren’t good for your health.” The doctor advised. “I know, I just.. I just want to...you know.” Kiyoko tried to explain. “To what? Forget?” Doctor Shim finished Kiyoko’s sentence for her. “I guess you could put it that way.” She replied. “You know, Kiyoko, there are other ways, how do I put it… let out some steam?” The doctor tried explaining. “Well, you can try doing what you do best.” Doctor Shim suggested. “Are you talking about the piano?” Kiyoko questioned. “Exactly.”Doctor Shim smiled. “I can’t play the piano, remember?” Kiyoko said, disappointment dripping from the tip of her tongue. “And why can’t you?” Doctor Shim asked, tilting her head. “Because of my fingers, they just don’t work the same anymore.” Kiyoko clarified. “And did you at least try to play the piano? Like you used to?” Doctor Shim continued. “No..” Kiyoko started. “And there you have it, Kiyoko. In these situations you have to attempt things in life. To overcome the challenges. It isn’t the end of the world, darling. I’m helping you face the world again, but it’s not going to do you any good if you don’t help yourself.” Doctor Shim explained each and every word clearly. Kiyoko knew what she meant and Kiyoko knew what she had to do. She had to help herself, because no one can except for her. “Did anything else happen in the past week?” Doctor Shim continued on. “Yes, actually… I got berated by a stranger for smoking and drinking.” Kiyoko recalled the events from that night. “And how did you feel about hearing those words come out from the stranger’s mouth?” Doctor Shim nodded to each and every word Kiyoko spoke as she wrote down the details in her notebook. “Call me crazy but… it made me feel alive. Like, I could feel my blood boiling because I was so enraged that the person thought they could just boss me around. But that’s the thing, I finally felt something deep within me for once in such a long time.” Kiyoko explained to her doctor. “That person has made more progress with you than I ever managed to in three years, are you thinking of switching doctors?” Doctor Shim joked. “Of course not! Plus he’s really mean to me..” Kiyoko sighed. “Ah! It’s a boy?” Doctor Shim asked excitedly. “Why do you seem so thrilled?” Kiyoko questioned. “Nothing. It’s just, you actually carried out a conversation with a boy. Is he cute?” Doctor Shim continued to ask. She has always been like this; although she was very wise and knew exactly what to say all the time, she also had this childish side to her when it came to topics like boys and friends whom Kiyoko encountered, almost as if she was a mother figure to the latter. “What?” Kiyoko asked dumbfounded, “he’s just mean!” she continued. “He sounds like he could be good for you.” Doctor Shim proposed. “In what way?” Kiyoko asked. “A friend. Or maybe something more. I don’t know.” Doctor Shim smirked. “How could someone, who by the way is a complete stranger, be good for me when all he did was nag and argue with me?” Kiyoko shot back. “You know Kiyoko, sometimes you need people like that in life. Someone who stands firm for what he believes in. He sounds like a genuine person who knows the difference between the good and the bad. Try to initiate friendship, he might be able to teach you a thing or two.” Doctor Shim encouraged. “I’ll think about it.” Kiyoko answered. “So I’ll see you in a week, same time?” Doctor Shim asked, shutting her notebook and unclicking her pen. “Yes, thank you doctor.” Kiyoko said before leaving the room.
