Getting ready to go to Con Bravo, loading up my convention backpack. I took a broken Nintendo, gutted it, added hinges, straps and a closure, and lined it with felt. It only hold the necessities but the power button still works and lights up and it always gets a lot of attention. People think it's just the coolest goddamned thing. And they're right, of course.

Well, I have to be careful because if I go beyond 1929, I’ve gotta talk about the Depression, which I might want to do. But Dos Passos’s post-depression work is like 1200 pages long. Gastby and Manhattan Transfer (Dos novel) for sure.

You could talk about how certain trends characterizing American literature leading up to 1929 reflected growing doubts in the public's cultural consciousness, which indicated a kind of prescience of the onset of the Depression. And/or the idea that such nagging doubts were sort of the other side of the coin of the Roaring 20s. That'd go nicely with Gatsby. Idk about Dos, though. Obv.

yeah, originally I wanted to do a complete survey of depictions of the death of American dream from 20s to the 70s but they said that was stupid and too long so here’s where I am at, haha.

yeah, mate. i'm about to go play it right now, actually. it's pretty great so far. it's this whole southern gothic thing, which is weirdly synchronistic because i've been kind of into southern gothic/dark bluegrass music lately. it's a missing persons case, and the girl who's missing is totally a bro, too. she insisted on spending her bachelorette party by spending the night in a haunted house, changing the bachelorette scavenger hunt to stuff like "see a ghost," "find a spider, alive or dead," and "find a way into the mausoleum." and then you find her audio recordings (which she makes on her phone to document their haunt-hunting experience) and in it her maid of honor is like, "dude, remember when lisa got married and we just had a romcom marathon? never during that time did i think, 'i'm going to die here.' just saying." and the bride-to-be is like, "speak for yourself. after two romcoms in a row, i was thinking fondly of my own mortality." i'm like, shit, i can't wait to find this girl, she gets me

I Heart Nerds

The only thing that annoys me more than all of the "I <3 Nerds" merchandise that is the new trend among teenagers who lack qualities usually found in nerds (coughintellegencecough) is the comments by the people who also find them stupid, but are not nerds. Not all nerds are acne-ridden, suspender-wearing, ugly people with broken glasses and no care about personal hygiene or presentation. There are hot nerds. Not just the guys who wear glasses in ads. Being a nerd isn't about how you look, it's about how much you genuinely enjoy learning and knowing things. You can't just one day decide you like how a nerd dresses and then mimic the attitude to become one, it's just kind of a thing you are. 

Can you look at John or Hank Green, Alex Day, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Tennant,  etc. and tell me you don't think they're even a little bit good looking? 

This whole "nerd-chic" thing is pretty aggravating, actually. All of these things are things I was made fun of for in school, and now those same people who were making fun of me are doing and "liking" those same things...
