The light was at its peak. Beaming in the middle of the sky as it reflected off the river creating soft glittery specks of light in the water.
The forest was calm. The gentle sways of wind. Leaves slowly cascading onto the ground forming a decorated floor below your feet. Yet you…you were a stark opposite.
He was so close, hovering just behind you as his eyes scanned your every move. Eywa, it made you nervous. It felt as if he was breathing on your neck, crawling through your skin with his watchful gaze just…waiting.
It was your first hunt. You had been hunting before, following Neteyam carefully as his footsteps made no sound. Treading through the forest as he effortlessly claimed his prey.
You weren’t overthinking, how could you? With the buzzing in your head. Nerves building up from your toes clawing up into your stomach and humming so high pitched inside your brain that you couldn’t form a single thought at all.
That’s why, you presume you made such a naïve mistake. You tripped.
A blistering root, right below your foot stinging your sole as you yelped loudly. Any prey that may have been close was long gone by now, they would’ve scurried off the moment the leaves below your feet rustled too loudly.
You never hit the ground though. Even when you braced for impact, throwing your bow far as you were diving face first into the dirt.
But of course, he was right behind you. Waiting. Like he half-expected you would mess up. His hand was on you instantly, wrapping around your arm to protect you from the incoming impact. You barely had time to registered what was happening before you were tightly pulled into his warm chest, his other arm bracing around you as you catch your lost breath.
“I’m sorry” You whisper into his arms. Looking down, cheeks red hot with embarrassment. You have walked these forests for years. You know better.
Neteyam stays still, a comforting hand caressing the small of your back. Tracing the patterns on your skin that he has come to know well. It was quiet and intimate, a soft moment before he pulled away ever so slightly to look you in the eyes.
“It is okay” he murmurs. His voice soft and calm. “Is your foot alright?”
You pull back nodding “Mhm, just stings a bit. I will live” Neteyam chuckles slightly his eyes crinkling as his smile meets the rest of his face.
“How does someone not see a root that big?” He laughs his hand coming up to push a strand of hair out of your face. “You were not thinking.”
“No.” You pout looking up at him “Not at all.”
Neteyam lets out a snort. It was short and from the heart. “Come. Let’s go back.”
Back at high camp, you and all the Sully kids sat in the healer’s tent. Kiri crouched down grinding herbs together for the small wound on your foot. Lo’ak and Spider sat across from you.
“Bro how did you even manage that?” Lo’ak snickered pointing at the injury
You rolled your eyes “I may have stepped on a blistering root.” The words were barely coherent the way you mumbled them.
Lo’ak let out a loud boisterous laugh before Neteyam slapped him on the arm.
“Shut up bro.” Lo’ak recoils dramatically clutching his arm. “I’m just saying bro, first hunt and the ground took you out.”
“Kinda impressive.” Spider adds on with a mischievous grin
You let out a loud groan, your head dropping into your hands. “Eywa take mercy on me and swallow me whole.”
Kiri snorts a little. “You are dramatic. The forest has a mind of its own”
“Unlike her.” Lo’ak pointed at you again, a light-hearted joke that made himself crack up more than anyone else in the tent. Neteyam stares at the boisterous pair, scoffing at their antics.
“Get out of here skxwang go annoy Norm or something.” Neteyam shoos Spider and Lo’ak out of the tent.
He hovers closely as Kiri finishes wrapping your foot, his knee brushing yours ever so slightly as he crouches down beside you.
“You will be fine.” Kiri finally states, brushing off as she stands. “Just don’t step on another one please.”
“I will not. I’m sure he will make sure of it.” You pointed your head at Neteyam, meeting his gaze as he stared at you intently. Kiri laughs nodding as she makes her way out of the tent.
The tent flap falls shut and suddenly the noise is gone and its just the pair staring at each other.
Your eyes drop to the ground, your hand resting on his thigh, tracing patterns as the silence fills the room. “I really messed up the hunt.”
Neteyam chuckles. “You did not ruin it.” His hand laying on top of yours softly caressing your fingers. “You simply…had a different technique.”
Your jaw slacks open. “Neteyam! That is no better!”
He chuckles, his smile spreading across his face. “No harm in trying new things.”
You shake your head “You suck. You’re meant to be encouraging me.”
“I am.” He says with a grin growing on his face “I am encouraging you to look where you step.”
You huff, slumping against his body in protest of his rudeness. “You still did well.” He chimes in
“Oh yeah? Even with all the dramatics?”
“Especially with the dramatics.” He cheeses.
“I think you’re enjoying making fun of this a little too much.”
“Perhaps.”
“You’re lucky I like you.”
You both laugh, bodies easing together without thought or hesitation, your weight resting against his as the moment between you transforms into something quiet and grounding.
Later that night once the light dipped low into the horizon and the camp settled into their nightly routine, Neteyam and Lo’ak sat with each other around the warm fire. The wood crackling in the beats of silence.
“Seriously bro I have no idea how she managed it.” Lo’ak laughed again.
Neteyam shoved him lightly. “Yeah. She can be such an idiot sometimes.” A pause as a warm smile glowed onto his face “My idiot. But still.”

ALWAYS BEEN YOU
summary: neteyam knows he wants to spend the rest of forever with you by his side, all he has to do now is ask.
Neteyam couldn’t remember a moment that wasn’t spent with you. You were constantly attached by the hip ever since you were children. Growing up together, it brought you closer than anyone could imagine.
Now both adults in the clan, seen as one of the people your bond between Neteyam has never faltered. He was your home and you were his, the sunshine to rain and warmth to the cold. There was nothing ever separating the two of you, not his duties, not his siblings, it was always you.
The only thing that confused the clan was that you two were not mated yet. Everyone knew you as a couple, how could anyone think otherwise when it seemed as if your fingertips had melded together due to holding each other’s hands for so long.
Neteyam also thought about it. Everyday, every night, every waking moment he wanted to ask you to be his, mate before Eywa and connect your souls as one. But he was so nervous, even after years of being with you constantly, he still got butterflies when you give him compliments or when you give him a soft kiss on the lips before you say goodbye for the night.
It was those butterflies that cemented his decision. He wanted these butterflies forever, he wanted to make sure they would never flutter away. That made him plan out his day, his day for you.
You had woken up a couple hours ago and were in the forest picking flowers and herbs for Mo’at. A task you had been assigned when you were younger and never seemed to grow out of it. The forest was peaceful this time of day, the animals just starting to rise and the sound of nature was quiet, like a whisper.
A whisper behind you. “Y/N.” You could recognise that voice anywhere.
“Hi Teyam.” He snaked his arms through your arms to hug you tightly, resting his chin in the scoop of your neck.
“What are you up to?” His voice was soft, the early morning still having its effects on your boy.
“Getting some herbs for your grandmother. I do this everyday Teyam, can’t believe you can’t guess.” Your tone was playful fiddling with Neteyam’s hand that wrapped around you.
“I just wanted to hear your beautiful voice, is that not allowed. Hm?” Neteyam whispered into your ear a cheeky grin plastered across his face as you rolled your eyes at him.
“Fine…I guess you can.”
“Outstanding.” He muttered before leaving a soft kiss on your neck before spinning your body around so you were now face to face. “Are you doing anything special today, yawne?”
“Hmm I don’t think so. I wanted to swim in the river later but that’s all I had planned.” He hummed in response nodding his head.
“We should swim at night, the river is calmer then.” Nodding you rested in his embrace, seeking his closeness.
“Did you want to do anything today Neteyam?” He wanted to ask you to be his. Not like he could blurt that all out now, he had to make the moment special, for a woman as special as you.
“Hm not really, just wanted to be with you.” You blushed, his sweet words never got old.
“Well, I am actually in your arms, so mission accomplished.”
“No. Longer. I want to be with you all day today.” He sounded like a grumpy toddler making you snicker resulting in Neteyam pinching the small of your back.
“Ow! Teyam not funny.” You pushed him light before he smooshed you into his arms hugging you tightly.
“Oh! I’m so sorry my princess.” He was now the one with a playful tone as you grumbled into his chest. Resting in comfortable silence for moments you listened to Neteyam’s soft breathing, it calmed you, he calmed you. “Have you eaten yet today?
“I had some dried meat before I left but I am still hungry.”
“Let me make you some food, we can head back to the village.” You nodded, unlacing yourself from Neteyam as you held his hand. He squeezed it before leading your way back to the village, holding your basket full of plants.
The walk back shouldn’t have taken as long as it did. It was only 30mins when you walked out there yourself, but the walk back with Neteyam made it close to an hour. Why?
Because halfway through the walk Neteyam decided he wanted to rest. He just wanted to lay on the forest ground. With you in his arms as you stared up into the tall trees, leaves falling around your flat bodies.
Neteyam had good reason for doing this. He was nervous, the closer he got to making you food, meant the closer you guys were going to go for a swim, meaning the closer he was going to ask you.
It made him jittery, his heartbeat fast and breaths would become faster the more he would think about it. But your presence reminded him why he was nervous. Because you were the most important person in his life, he didn’t want a life without you.
After a while of consistent nagging from you. The both of you returned the village, taking a seat in Neteyam’s own tent. You both got your own as you became one of the people, a sense of privacy you both dearly longed for, for the longest time when you were teenagers.
“Neteyam I am actually starving now, your pitstop in the middle of a forest was not needed.”
“Um yes it was, my feet were sore. Duh.” Neteyam smiled back at you as you shoved him lightly.
“I could’ve carried you.” You flexed your arm muscles as Neteyam chuckled.
“Definitely could have, my strong girl.”
“I am hungry Neteyam.”
“Goodness Y/N, I will make some now.”
“Thankyou, Teyam. The best man in the world.” You kissed his cheek as he plated together a mixture of fruits and seeds, cutting them with his knife for you to eat easily.
“Ooo is that Episoth? That’s my favourite.” You smiled sneaking one as Neteyam was chopping it.
“I collected them for you.”
“Aww thankyou paskalin. You’re so good to me.” You scooted towards him to give him a soft kiss on the cheek.
“I do it because you’re the best baby.” He then kissed you back, softly brushing his lips against yours before finishing serving your food. “Here you go, all done.”
“Mm thankyou baby.” You smiled before delving into the delicious array of food laid out for you.
After you an Neteyam finished your food, it was compulsory for the both of you to pass out on the mat of his floor. As his dad called it, “a food coma.” Your full stomachs and sleepy nature lead to the most enjoyable nap you both had. Waking up to being wrapped up in Neteyam’s arms as he looked down at you.
His heart burst at your sleeping figure. So peaceful, so beautiful. Oh, Eywa he loved you so much. He had to ask you soon. Eclipse was about to start and he wanted the beauty of Pandora to surround the beauty of you as he asked you, as he spilled his vulnerabilities and love to you on a silver platter.
As you both rose from your nap, Neteyam reminded you of your swim that you had planned earlier.
“Oh! You are right. We should fly there now, I do not want to be out too late.” He nodded placing a hand on the small of your back as you both headed towards where your ikrans stayed. His fingertips burned, and his heartbeat was rapid. You noticed this, how couldn’t you? He was so visibly anxious.
As you both mounted your ikrans, you turned to him before you both took off. “Are you okay yawne?”
He smiled at you, had he been that obvious? “Yes Y/N, do not worry.” Pulling his visor on and called out for his ikran to take flight. Your ikran following suit soon after.
The breeze was cool against your skin as you both flew into the arriving night. Occasional calls from the both of you as you sawed through the sky.
Landing on the edge of the riverbank, you dismounted your ikran sitting on the edge of the river, dipping your feet into the cool water. “It feels really nice Teyam. Come get in!” You slowly slid the rest of your body into the water, your feet scrapping the bottom lightly as you kept afloat.
“I am, I am. Be patient Y/N.” Neteyam said as he took a deep breath before bomb diving into the water, the splash saturating the rest of your face.
“Neteyam! You got me wet!”
“You’re in water???” He laughed at you confused before coming up to you, wrapping his tail loosely around your waist.
“My face. Was not.”
“Don’t worry, you’re still looking beautiful.” A small smile appeared on your face the blue tint of your cheeks going darker. “Aww look you’re blushing!”
“Shut up.” You said covering your cheeks as Neteyam brought you closer. It was time. He had to do it now. Seeing you flustered and glowing in the moonlight. This was it, this was the woman he needed for eternity.
“Y/N.”
“Hm?”
“I love you.” You smiled up at him, seeing his nervous eyes flicker not sure whether to look at you or not.
“I love you too.”
“I have thought about this for the longest time.” His arms pulled you closer to him, so your bodies met. “You have been with me since childhood. Every dear memory I hold you are there with me. After all these years, I still get nervous to kiss you, I feel lovestruck looking into your eyes and I know that I want to spend every moment for the rest of my life with you. Y/N I see you and I love you so much. I crave you, I need you, I plead for you, and I love you.” Kissing your forehead, he then rests his against yours. “Y/N I see no life ahead of me where you are not there with me, I want to be with you forever, I want to be one with you. I wish for you to be mine.”
“Neteyam…” You pulled him down to give him a passionate kiss. A kiss filled with desperation, a kissed filled with love. Your hands pulled him closer to you, as if your bodies would meld together.
“I have always been yours.”

summary: neteyam had little direction in life anymore, he had no idea what to do with his life as a metkayina, but meeting you gave him purpose.
contents: just a cute little fluffy one-shot, fem! metkayina reader, 1.2k words
╭─────────────────╮
It had been a couple months since Neteyam, and his family had moved to Awa’atlu. Though the change was drastic and leaving his home was a tear in his heart that would never heal, he made do.
Luckily, he was not left to fend for his brother any longer as he had occupied his time with Tsireya instead of making trouble. But that left Neteyam feeling lost. He had no friends, no home, no real place. He felt like he was just existing. His life used to have so much meaning, it used to be so set in stone, with a path he felt was right for him. Now he had nothing.
That was until he saw you.
You were not the chief’s daughter, nor a hunter. You spent your days weaving clothes for the people in your village and spent your nights basking in the starlight. You were so eye-catching, that even in the darkest of nights you still shun to him like the brightest star in the night sky.
He saw you for the first time on a quiet evening, laying in the ocean, lettings the waves crash over your figure gently. You were calm, still, embracing the beauty of the nature surrounding you. Though Neteyam thought you were a bit too still.
He noticed your figure floating in the water, he didn’t think much of it until you had not moved for just too long. His heart started to pound in his throat and his body grew tense. Jumping into the cool ocean, as it nipped his warm skin, he frantically swam towards you.
“Excuse me! Are you alright?!” His deep frenzied voice startled you as you let out a loud gasp. “I’m sorry I did not mean to frighten you.” You studied his features as they glimmered in the starlight. You of course had seen him before, he was the forest boy who had taken your village by storm. But never had you seen him this close.
“I am fine. Why do you ask?” Neteyam looked away from you, his face dripping of embarrassment. He felt his cheeks grow hot as he tried to conjure an answer in his muddled brain.
“I…thought you were in trouble.” The quietness of his voice made you lean closer to hear him, his eyes refused to make contact with you as you let out a small chuckle.
“How sweet of you. But I am just floating, no trouble here.” Neteyam nodded, the feeling of awkwardness growing in his chest. He swallowed harshly trying to respond to you once again, your calm aura making him uncomfortably enticed by you.
“Well…that is good. Have fun floating.” Turning in a hurry he went to swim off but you grabbed his wrist swiftly to prohibit him from escaping. The feeling of your strong grip on his wrist made him look at you with confusion as his body continued to grow hot.
“What is your name, forest boy?” You tilted your head at him, using your strength to pull his body closer to yours in the cool water.
“Its…um. Neteyam.”
“That’s a cute name, Neteyam.” The way it escaped your mouth and rolled off your tongue made Neteyam’s whole body shiver. You noticed it and chuckled at him making him grow even more embarrassed.
Never had he felt so entranced by a woman, usually he would be the most charming man a lady had ever spoken to. Now he felt like a star-struck boy with no thoughts except about the way he was making a fool out of himself in front of a beautiful woman.
“What is your name?” He coughed before his question, hoping to expel some of his apprehension. He puffed his chest out hoping to look more confident, despite still being in your grasp.
“Wouldn’t you like to know forest boy.” Neteyam stared at you perplexed.
“Well yeah. That is why I asked.” You giggled at him again earning an even more confused look from the blushing boy in front of you.
“Well then. My name’s Y/N. And I should be returning home.”
“Let me take you home. It is a gentlemen thing to do.” You blushed slightly at his comment before dragging him with you as you moved towards shore. He looked at you expectingly for an answer, specifically a yes.
“Do you even know where my marui is?”
“No…”
“Neteyam you’re a cute guy y’know that.” He spluttered at your out of the blue compliment. He never really got flustered from compliments, but for some godforsaken reason, you were riling up his heart immensely making him feel incredibly humiliated.
“Oh. Thankyou.” You motioned for him to hurry up as his slow swimming pace was starting to make you grow impatient.
“Hurry up.”
“Oh! Yup.” He couldn’t deny the reason he was swimming so slow behind you was because he couldn’t concentrate on anything but you. The way your tail swung in the water and your hair flowed beautifully through the ripples, it captivated him, and he couldn’t take his gaze off you.
Picking up the pace, the pair eventually reached the shore. The wet sand sticking to Neteyams body as it fell off your skin. Water droplets running off your skin, as they reflected the nightsky made Neteyam almost drool. The way the water would drip down your curves and fall off your gracefully made him feel like a fire started inside his ribcage.
“You have a staring problem.” This time Neteyam was determined to not be caught off-guard like a child being caught misbehaving. Staring deep into your eyes to assert some level of confidence he stepped closer to you, making your breath hitch.
“I’m staring because your beautiful.” It shocked Neteyam that he had the guts to be so charismatic, but it shocked you more that you felt your entire body heat up as you looked into the alluring amber eyes of the confident man above you.
“Oh, shut up and walk me home.” Neteyam chuckled at your reaction, not realising that you had already taken off, walking ahead of him.
“Hey wait up!”
“You are proving to be slow even on land! I thought you were a forest boy!” giggling at your own remark, you turned and waited for the boy that was jogging effortlessly towards you.
“Maybe I am trying to savour this moment.” Rolling your eyes at him, you continued to walk towards the direction of your marui.
“Maybe I am trying to get home, now hurry up you extremely slow man.”
“Ok Ok I am coming.”
Afterwards dropping you home, or more accurately trailing behind you and watching the way your hips swung. Neteyam was sure of one thing. He was now infatuated with you and had finally found a new meaning to his new life in Awa’atlu.
