wholesome(TM) Netherlands/fem!Canada headcanons:

Thijs - Netherlands, short for Mathijs Maddie - Canada, short for Madeline

when they have downtime, they’ll sit quietly on the couch --- sometimes pressed up against each other, sometimes not --- reading their respective books, or sketching, or working, and hardly speak a word for hours, just enjoying the company and the intimacy of a genuinely comfortable silence.

in the mornings they like to drink coffee and watch the sun rise from the balcony, if they have one.

if they don’t have a balcony, and maybe even sometimes if they do, they like to take their coffee with them and go on morning walks. it always starts out as being the last thing they want to do, mostly they just want to go back to bed, but by the end they feel refreshed and they’ve had some good conversations.

Thijs used to be so obsessive about keeping his kitchen clean (the whole place, really, but especially the kitchen) and hadn’t used it very much until Maddie moved in with him. Maddie likes cooking when the mood strikes her, a bit of her french influence coming through, and she coaxed Thijs into calming down enough that they can bake things and cook meals and enjoy them without having to immediately spot clean everything in sight, because honey, oh my god, you are ridiculous.

(this is not to say that his kitchen is not still very clean. it is very clean. he’s just gotten more okay with dirtying it up every now and then without it being too distracting, especially since cleanup is so much easier with Maddie helping.)

Maddie likes seeing Thijs with his hair down. it makes him look a little softer, and also it’s just very cute. especially when he smiles.

they’re both animal lovers. Thijs was a little worried about the safety of his pet bunny with Kumajirou around, but luckily Kuma is very well-behaved and much more interested in sleeping than bothering the rabbit. Maddie didn’t know anything about rabbit care beforehand, but she’s grown very fond of the little bunny, and Kuma will cuddle up with Thijs if Maddie’s lap isn’t readily available.

they both have very weird and complicated families, and occasionally they bond over it. it’s nice to have someone who understands.

Thijs likes to kiss Maddie’s freckles, and the way it makes her laugh makes him Feel Things. Maddie likes to pull him down to kiss his forehead, finds it endearing how he gets flustered when they’re in public, and loves how he relaxes into it when they’re alone.

Thijs is actually pretty tactile and affectionate in general when they’re alone. he’ll hold her hand in public, maybe kiss her cheek, he’s never cold toward her and tries not to be distant, but at home is where he really relaxes and shows his fondness --- through cuddles and little touches and kisses and nice gestures, mostly, because he’s bad at expressing himself with words but he still wants her to know that he loves her.

on that note, he has gotten better at using his words since he met Maddie. in turn, Maddie has gotten better at reading him without needing him to just say it outright every time. there are still miscommunication issues sometimes, but they’ve learned to get it sorted out quickly instead of letting it stew and assuming things, which was a bit of a Struggle(TM) at first.

Maddie helps him with back aches sometimes. Thijs is very tall, well over six feet (185+ cm), which is nice aesthetically but always comes with a price tag in the form of back problems, so she’s learned some tricks to help ease the ache and get him to relax. she was worried about hurting him at first, especially when he asked her to walk on his back, but he can handle a lot, as it turns out. including her full weight.

(also, she gets to stare at his back, which is very nice. and put her hands all over it, which is also very nice, so. win-win.)

Maddie likes it when Thijs brushes her hair. he learned how to braid just for her. (his little sister’s was hardly ever long enough for him to have practiced on her.)

it’s a tired cliche, but Thijs really does like tulips. he has some in his garden, and he likes surprising Maddie with them at random times, never the same color twice in a row.

Thijs teaches Maddie about gardening, and Maddie teaches Thijs new recipes using the food he grows. he teaches her about soccer, and she teaches him about hockey --- after teaching him how to ice skate, of course. he helps her get better at sketching and drawing, and she reads her books out loud to him.

(he likes it when she reads to him.)

Maddie likes a nice bath once in a while. Thijs is much more of a shower person, not least because he’s usually just too big to fit comfortably in a bathtub --- and also why would you want to sit in your own filth for an hour when you have the option to not do that --- but:

they take baths together sometimes. it’s a tight fit, but Maddie fits in his lap neatly enough that they make it work, and absolutely they’re splashing each other and joking around when they’re not relaxing. they take their time washing each others’ bodies and massaging soap in each others’ hair --- and maybe sometimes they get a little handsy too, but, honestly, they’ve tried doing the do in the tub exactly one time, and it was definitely not as fun as it looks in the movies, so things don’t usually get heated until they’re back in the bedroom. mostly it’s just a nice time to relax, enjoy each other, and be intimate without turning it into something more.
