Soccer. Passion.
On Sunday was the beginning of the MLS regular season. Since I’m back to enjoying the beautiful game, I’m back to watching my local team and my team since 1995, the New England Revolution try and make it back to the MLS Championship game.
I headed to Nashua, NH to a watch party at the Boston Billiards Club to join my fellow Midnight Riders in cheering the team on against the Houston Dynamo. The Midnight Riders are a club that have been the Supporters group for the Revolution since 1995.
The first game of the season ended in a 3-3 tie. The Revolution ending up going down 3-2 late in the game and coming back in stoppage time to tie it up with a huge play by super-sub Daigo Kobayashi to head in his first goal of his New England Revolution career.
There are major points that I’ve seen that need to be touched on as the season goes on.
Our defense is strong but definitely needs to meld. With Gershon Koffie basically replacing Jermaine from last season and Je-Vaughn Watson adding some strength to the back line. I believe we need to see Bobby Shuttleworth and his defenders being able to read each other better. The Dynamo’s first goal before half time was purely only a defensive error and would never had happened had the defender and Bobby been communicating better.
Our midfield game is very strong right now and we just need to make sure that our forwards and wingers and making do with what is going on from there. We have definitely seen that anyone of our forwards can score with ease. Diego Fagundez making wonder strikes from any where on the field. Davies scrapping and fighting for the ball to the last moment. Bunbury making beautiful strikes and runs.
Also, it seems that Kobayashi will have gained some confidence from his goal in this first game. Maybe he will gain a better position with the team in terms of depth, which I think would be good for his game. We definitely have a strong team, which just needs to figure out the best formation for the time being. Our team at the moment is definitely more geared to attack at first and I enjoy that thoroughly, being an attacking midfielder/ forward in my playing days.
That being said, we have our first home game on Saturday, and it will definitely be telling for the season to see if we go with a similar formation or completely switch up (as is normal with Jay Heaps) and try something completely different. I would definitely like to see Gamble and McCrary out on the field to get some playing time. Also, agreeing with most other fans, let us not start with Rowe in a CDM position, it just is not his place.
NETID, Glory Glory Revolution and Go Revs!
Finally
My New England Revolution is back in the MLS Cup playoffs. After a roller coaster season, we managed to finish in third. Generating the highest point total in recent memory and second highest in club history. We play this weekend agains Sporting Kansas City and I already have my ticket. We're playing at home in the semi finals. This is in real. We could do it. We have the skill, ability and drive. Now all we need is the grit to hold on. Last night was incredible. I was with some of my best friends and let me tell you; I have never felt more at home in a pub than I do at RíRá. Kickoff is at 8pm on Saturday. I'm going into work today and letting them know I won't be there at all Saturday. I plan on being at the tailgate all day. We need to win this. I can't believe we're here. Playoffs. It's time to put a star on our jersey.
