HAMILTON — For certain types of fish, a rite of spring is swimming upstream to spawn. And for a certain group of land-dwelling mammals, a rite of spring is helping the fish get there. Every year, some species of fish that normally live at sea come inland to lay their eggs. The problem on the Ipswich River — along with many other waterways — is that they run into man-made dams. NEWBURY — In the last year, a lot of junk has been thrown in a tiny stretch of the Mill River on Route 1.
Patrick Donohue of Melrose found an iPad, for example.
Jim Shimer and Ben Meade struggled with a cathode ray tube from an old television. They scrambled up the steep bank and lugged it to a truck for the trash.
Once they horsed it in, gallons of water came pouring out of the old television’s innards.
Shimer and Meade started laughing when they realized what the extra weight was.
Someone else joked that they should have found a flat screen TV instead.
There was also an ancient piece of exercise equipment, car parts and a length of fishing line.
Organized by the Nor’East chapter of Trout Unlimited (NETU), the cleanup is done every year — meaning all that junk was dumped illegally in the last 12 months.
There were also dozens of nips, coffee cups and cigarette butts.
Also helping was Bartlett Tree Service. They provided a truck for heavy lifting, if necessary, and a dump truck for hauling the trash.
NETU has a lot of interest in the Mill River. The state stocks it with brown trout every year.
And they pay close attention to the herring run every year.
Geoff Day, executive director of the Sea Run Brook Trout Coalition told the group that if they caught trout seven or eight inches in length, they were probably stocked.
However, if they caught smaller trout, it would be a good sign because that meant they are breeding in the river, he said.
As he did last week on the Ipswich River, Day measured the water temperature. The Mill River came in at 51 degrees, he said.
Meanwhile, Jack Ingram, predicted a bad season for trees.
The local manager with Bartlett, he pointed at numerous traces of gypsy moths on trees in the area.
After a severe drought, trees stripped of their leaves this summer could have a hard time surviving, he said.

IPSWICH — The little fish with their little brains have no idea any of this stuff goes on. But thankfully for them, people on dry land worry about their ability to get upstream and lay eggs. With winter over, many species of fish feel the urge to come in from the ocean to mate and spawn. But while some people have laid obstacles — such as dams — in the fishes’ way, another group has come behind…
