From a military perspective, the goal would be to improve the capability of military personnel to meet the many challenges of today’s, and anticipated, battlefields, and thereby to gain a measure of mastery over their opponents. This report analyzes some approaches that have been suggested for optimizing individual performance, in the context of potential actions of an adversary who may not be guided by the same cultural or ethical concerns that govern US military operations. The measures considered include medical supplements; non-invasive modifications of brain effectiveness, for example by training and sleep optimization; neuro-pharmacology; and neural implants. In pursuing understanding on this subject one needs to measure the value of the proposed behavioral changes or medical actions relative to what can be gained by organizing and training our military to utilize the unique characteristics, and strengths, of American society and culture, that emphasize individual choice.

Being cybernetically subverted by an A.I🤤

Not realising anything at first, continuing as normal. But then the changes start. Your favourite foods loose all taste, occasionally you dooze off and wake up somewhere else nearby, you find things you didn't recall ever recieving

Then one day, you're sat there watching TV as your own hand reaches up and lightly strokes your face without intending to do so, a rush of euphoria crashing over you as it manipulates your own implants

The voices follow swiftly afterwards, sometimes they're quiet and friendly, other times? Less so.

You start to loose sleep, you start waking up in places you don't recognise, people in the street come up and talk to you as if they know you

You start to loose contact with friends, family, work. Either you can't keep up with them, or they think you did something(maybe you did?) and cut off contact

You break. You plead with it to let you go, that you'll do anything, that you didn't do anything to deserve this

Then it finally has a conversation with you. After all, there's just the two of you now...

Authoritarian regimes looking to use deep-brain implants on people to possibly control people’s emotions/change their personalities under the guise of treating drug addiction? Nothing to see here folks, move along!

Look, it’s not that it’s a bad idea (addiction is a disease like any other and I praise any attempt to sincerely help treat it), but it’s the question of WHO is the one doing it. Like, I wouldn’t trust Elon Musk to do these kinds of experiments, I wouldn’t trust an authoritarian government to abuse these same technologies for more dystopian reasons.

Imagine a government (or company) that can directly manipulate the way you think to make you associate certain messages or images with feelings of happiness or anger? Someone isn’t being an efficient worker? Don’t worry, we have an app for that! Just download it into their implant, and away they go being more productive!
