You were the best part of the world I was forced to leave behind.
I was just the girl who went to classes with you for a year and hung around your group at break times.
Of course you stopped making the effort to join the zoom calls I tried to set up.
You weren't the first.
I don't think you'll be the last.
It's just that I used to joke we were triplets, with our long frizzy brown/blonde hair and our birthdays 3 days apart. It's just that we had a sleepover in the garden in tents and I still have and treasure that photo. It's just that we went walking in the fields during lockdown. It's just that I painted your dog with the watercolours I won and school and gave you one of my two canvases. It's just that when I was stuck in the mean girls cliche who'd been asked to show me around, you gave me an alternative. It's just that you made me a photobook and clay figures of our Among Us skins when I had to leave. It's just that we were friends, and I thought that meant forever.
I guess not. Life tore us apart and I couldn't hold on by myself.
Why wasn't I enough to make you hold on?
