In some respects, casting Lucy Liu as Watson is actually more awesome than casting her as Holmes would have been. Holmes is the cooler character, Holmes is the hero, the genius, the icon ... but Watson is the everyman.
A woman of colour representing the everyman seems in some ways more progressive than a woman of colour playing a loner genius would have been.
(Still, she would have made a brilliant Holmes.)
