Morning Adventures
The title may say "Adventures" but that's only because I thought putting "HOLY SHIT I WAS SCARED FUCKIN SHITLESS" wasn't a good title. Let's begin! So it was a normal morning, went to bed too late as per usual. Call comes in at about 2 am which happens at least once a tour. Call is about 45 mins away with the shitty snow covered roads, again which happens at least once a tour. Dispatch comes on telling us we are going for a lady in labour. No big deal, babies usually take like 16 hours to come out anyway. Especially a first born. Well that's where I was wrong! We pick her up, contractions are close-ish together but I've seen ladies with closer. We got about 20 minutes or so into the drive and she says to me, "I feel something down there." She was right. I looked and saw a fuzzy head poking out. Now being a male without any kids I don't have exorbitant amounts of obstetric experience. We pull over to deliver and she stops crowning. Silly me figured okay it's time for some diesel therapy to get our ass to the hospital. She starts crowning again and I intended to get my partner's attention so he would pull over. I apparently screamed his name and he looked back to see dinner plates where my eyes should be. I look back down and there's a head poking out. Reach down to help the baby and did a quick glance back up to see if we were stopped yet. We weren't. Quick look back to my patient and there's a kid shooting out! Well holy shit. I'm so very grateful that everything went good and the baby was in perfect health. That little instant between the baby splashing down until after I suctioned the nose felt like an hour. So then I cut the cord with the supplies from our 120 year old Obs kit and try to do the best I can to keep everything going smoothly. By some fluke it all worked out great! Got an update today from the dad and he is so very thankful for us and what we did to help his new family. It's the things like that that will keep me going. I don't have a lot of success stories but the ones I do hold a very special place. Hopefully I'll find out one day if they took my suggestion for the name. Oh and one more thing. That little voice in your head that says "take off your watch" when you see someone crowning is right. Listen to that voice!
