be strong. be beautiful. be brave.
be bold. be kind. smile more. laugh often.
don’t be too bold. don’t be too brave.
don’t make a man feel less-than.
be smart, but not too smart.
be warm. be loving. be compassionate.
hate your body. break your body.
give your body to others.
keep your body to yourself.
it’s not your body. it’s not your choice.
love openly. don’t be a slut.
speak, be silent. don’t challenge the way of the world.
close your eyes. let it happen.
why did you let it happen?
were you asking for it? what were you wearing?
cry, it is a woman’s rite of passage.
don’t cry, you weak, hysteric creature.
fight for yourself. stand for yourself.
lay down, be complicit.
who do you think you are?
you can’t do that. men only. you’re too weak.
fight, resist, grow, learn, be.
cry, curse, brawl, scream.
nevertheless -
persist.

A wretched week is almost over though I celebrated personal joy as our son graduated high school. Malala was just trying to get an education and religious extremists tried to kill her, they shot her in public on a bus. She survived and as a refugee continues to be a voice against the terrorists and a voice for education for girls. “Books, not bullets” . .. ..please feel free to go grab the block pattern and short bio at www.grubersquiltshop.com, available for another week. Yes I’m behind. It’s been a wretched and joyful week. ... ... Peace and love, justice and opportunity to all. "Female authors have been systematically underrepresented in translation; in 2016 a survey by the University of Rochester, for example, found that only 29% of all books translated to English over the previous decade were originally written by women.”
We thank The Guardian for changing their wording to more accurately place this 2016 survey in the longer movement begun at least two years prior.
You can read our full letter below . . .
Dear Guardian Readers' Editor:
Re: "Man Booker International shortlist dominated by female authors and translators" (www.theguardian.com, April 9),
We were delighted to read that the 2019 Man Booker International Prize shortlist includes an unusually high number of women authors in translation and women translators. One sentence, however, is not entirely accurate:
"Female authors have been systematically underrepresented in translation; in 2016 a survey by the University of Rochester revealed that only 29% of all books translated to English over the previous decade were originally written by women."
"Revealed" implies that this phenomenon had been unknown, untracked, and unanalyzed prior to the University of Rochester's investigations in 2016.
This is not the case. Although data on newly translated books of fiction and poetry is collected yearly by Open Letter Press, which is part of the University of Rochester, they were not the first to look at the numbers with respect to the author's gender. We request that this error (according to the Guardian's Editorial Code) be corrected.
In 2013 translator and writer Allison Anderson analyzed Open Letter's Three Percent database and found that only 26% of fiction and poetry in English translation was authored by women. She published her article “Where are the Women in Translation” in the online magazine Words Without Border on 14 May 2013.
In August 2014 book blogger Meytal Radzinski inaugurated Women in Translation month. Over the past five years she has done several “Counts” using the same Three Percent database and has posted her extensive and fairly eye-popping charts on her blog http://biblibio.blogspot.com/
In May 2015 we cofounded womenintranslation.tumblr.com to build awareness of the gender imbalance in literary translations into English. That same year we also organized and moderated a panel at the 2015 PEN World Voices Festival in New York City entitled "Who We Talk About When We Talk About Translation - Women's Voices." During this panel we presented charts showing how the gender breakdown varied widely depending on publisher, language, county of initial publication, continent.
These are just a few milestones in Women in Translation advocacy, all prior to 2016, al carried out by individual women.
While we thank the guardian.com for mentioning the longstanding underrepresentation of women in translation in an article on the Man Booker International Prize shortlist, we ask that the above sentence be revised to more accurately reflect the timeline of Women in Translation activism. The University of Rochester may have reported on the gender skew in 2016, but it was most definitely not the first to do so.
Thank you,
Best regards,
womenintranslation.tumblr.com
And the paper’s response:
Thanks. Not sure I agree that "revealed" automatically signifies first&only . . . but have changed the wording for avoidance of doubt.
Best wishes,

And our reply:
Thank you. The University of Rochester was following in the footsteps of others who were there before them, mostly women. It seemed unfair that they should figure so prominently in the article as the exclusive "revealer" of the gender gap.
Ive always been of the mindset of if something bad happened to me that day or if I got into an arguement with someone, it would ruin my entire day. That is, until today. Today, my sister @msspence72 taught me a valuable lesson. I was dealing with something particularly unkind, and I couldnt get myself out of my mental block of feeling put down by another (crying, tears and all, hey Im a very empathetic and emotional being). Her words were: Allow yourself to be sad, hurt, upset, whatever for an hour. Feel it all, talk about it and let it out of your system. But after that, dont waste any energy on it because what is done is done and you will not be productive if you sit there and think about this bad thing. So I did that. I let it out. I talked. And then I focused on the positive things in my life that Im working toward, and like that, the hurt went away. I moved on with my day. And I'm smiling and getting work done. Its all in your mindset and how you choose to deal with what life throws at you. I hope this can help some of you out there :) #motivated #staypositive #neverthelessshepersisted #strongerthanyesterday #entrepreneurs #growth #sisters #latina #empathy #willpowerp
Nevertheless, she persisted.
