A wretched week is almost over though I celebrated personal joy as our son graduated high school. Malala was just trying to get an education and religious extremists tried to kill her, they shot her in public on a bus. Jane Austen’s block in my #knowthem sampler. I don’t know if she’d pass as an ally in todays world but many of her ideas that she expressed through storytelling were progressive. Women survived at the whim of the men in their lives and really needed some rights? Slavery was heinous and should be abolished? Whoa, she was trying to move things forward from what she saw and experienced in her time and class, spiced up with great wit. Reading books helps us understand each other’s lives and experiences. Jane Austen’s books brought new ideas into English speaking culture especially since women weren’t published authors back then either. Aw heck, just go read one of her books - Pride and Prejudice hasn’t been out of print for nearly 200 years. ... ...
