Types of Malignant Melanoma
**Lentigo maligna melanoma: freckle = lentigo, flat, tan or brown, common in elderly.
**Nodular melanoma: grows in thickness first rather than superficial spread (so it metastasizes more often). May be diagnosed as hemangioma: tumor of blood vessles.
**Superficial spreading melanoma: MOST COMMON TYPE 70%. Spreads through epidermis before it goes deep. The spread is slow.
**Acrolentiginous melanoma: distal (on hands and feet). Found on nails, fingers, toes, soles of feet. Dark pigment.
**BTW for melanoma it is advised to do a wide-excisional biopsy. A punch biopsy would increase the risk of metastasis.
