Like many, loving the VM Starwars AU. Kudos for not making them all Jedi. I was going to ask whether Vax and the Ravenqueen would be Grey Jedi, but I see you are way ahead of me. What about Pike? I can just so easily picture her with a yellow or blue saber. Also what are the chances she and Scanlan are Twi'leks?

I’ve thought a lot about Pike and I’m very conflicted about how I want her to fit.  I don’t want everybody to end up as Jedi, but at the same time, it’s hard to justify not making Pike Force-sensitive.  I think perhaps she learned about the Force from her grandfather and is aware of her sensitivity, but isn’t really a Jedi, not at first anyway.  If and when she decides to become a proper Jedi, she would definitely have a yellow lightsaber. 

I think the way to deal with having so many Force-sensitives and Jedi in VM is to differentiate them in how they approach the Force and where they’re coming from.

Pike, I think, would approach the Force in a way similar to Chirrut.  She comes from a place of religion and philosophy and treats the Force like a living being that she has a relationship with.  This is very different from how Keyleth approaches the Force.  She was formally trained by her father to harness the Force as a power to be used in the protection of the innocent and the betterment of the Galaxy.  Vax tries to walk a path between the two when he starts to become aware of his sensitivity and takes lessons from both women.  Vex is more naturally in tune with the Force than her brother, but she isn’t as interested in the philosophy or formal training.  She likes to figure things out on her own and find her own path that doesn’t adhere to any ancient dogma.  Percy thinks of the Force as a dangerous power in the universe that he doesn’t fully understand.  It scares him, but he knows that it’s important and uses it when he must.

Grog is, on the other hand, the exact opposite of Force-sensitive.  He has no foresight and is far more at odds with the universe than he is one with it.  He finds a lot of the more destructive Jedi abilities very cool to watch, but the Force kind of weirds him out as well, so he doesn’t have a whole lot of envy over what some of his friends can do.

No one is entirely certain whether Scanlan is sensitive or he’s just extremely charming.  That mysteriousness, he feels, only adds to his allure.  He does feel a bit of envy about his Jedi friends and has been known to try to steal their lightsabers, particularly Percy’s because the engineer doesn’t use it that much and Scanlan likes purple.

Oh man, I got carried away.  Okay, back to your last question.

I don’t have the gnomes pegged as Twi’leks, no.  Everybody’s race has been a subject of much thought for me, but in the end I kind of just have them all down as humans from various backgrounds/planets.  Vex and Vax are the children of a diplomat from the Naboo city of Syngorn and a farmer from Alderaan.  Percy’s family ruled the planet Whitestone.  Scanlan is from Coruscant.  Grog is a Mandalorian brainwashed into a Stormtrooper.  Pike is from the moon Westruun.  Keyleth is from an Outer Rim world inhabited by Ashari.

I realize that that’s probably disappointing, but I couldn’t think of any interesting stuff that consistently worked.  On top of that, who is more likely to be a bunch of ridiculous fuck ups than a group of humans?  Nobody fucks up more than humans in the Star Wars universe.

If it’s any consolation, I did briefly consider having Pike and Scanlan be small protocol droids.

Hopefully not getting to real here, but I owe you an apology. Grew up with two awesome big sisters, married a strong woman, and by every indication my daughter will be independent and whomever she wants: superhero, rescue helicopter pilot or zookeeper(the current front runners). So I'm a committed feminist. However, until I heard you on critical re-role somehow assumed you were male. Sigh! the struggle to be a better person continues. Sorry again.
