Can you imagine living in the city of New Beijing? Everything so futuristic and breathtaking. New technology and inventions. Millions of busy people doing their jobs and going about their lives. Arriving there after a flight and you see the signs or hear the androids saying in sweet voices “Welcome to New Beijing”. I would give anything and everything to go to the palace.

The New Beijing Market at night.

I started this one in early February and never thought I’d actually finish it, but it is finally done after at least 19 hours.

If you’re confused with the symbols, it’s because my handwriting is really sloppy right now so I just wrote everything in the Breath of the Wild Sheikah language instead. It’s just the first words that popped into my mind, so I wouldn’t bother translating them.

If y’all really want to make the argument that Cinder’s not Asian I get it, she’s Lunar a made up fucking multicultural ethnicity where people look Greek (Wolf) and dark skin black (Winter and her dad) and also arguably hispanic (Winter’s mother, Sol).

 But that doesn’t stop Cinder from being explicitly described as east-Asian in appearance, that she fits in exceptionally well in a presumably predominately Asian New Beijing as long as her prostheses are covered, and her mother Channary is described as having the same characteristics and this all without even addressing that the Eastern Commonwealth is her chosen adoptive home.

So sure: Cinder’s “not Asian” but when you say that you just sound like a nitpicky racist who wants any excuse to call her white.

I realised that I didn’t really give any information on this painting when I originally posted it and didn’t give any insight into my thought process, so prepare for a bit of a long post. Also thank you to everyone who’s liked, reblogged and commented on this painting, I really appreciate it!

With this series of paintings, I want to illustrate these futuristic stories in a classical, storybook kind of way and feature elements from both the novel and the original fairy tale that they are based on. For example, I have decided to illustrate scenes from the book which can also represent familiar and iconic scenes from the original fairy tale, that scene here being Cinderella/Cinder fleeing the ball down the palace staircase.

I also wanted to draw upon my interest and influence from medieval and renaissance imagery as well as classic fairy tale imagery to create my paintings and think of these images as a sort of traditional Icon and mural for the main characters and their stories with hints of the futuristic and sci-fi elements included. In the case of this painting, those elements are the city seen in the background, and Cinder’s mechanical left leg and hand.

I have also included the prince of the story in the background (named Prince Kai in this retelling), something which i wasn’t originally intending to do, but it sort evolved itself as i realised I had included the love interests of the main characters in my sketches for the other paintings and felt like I couldn’t leave Kai out.
