Alzheimer’s Association Expands Research Initiative with New Grants

Scott Robarge utilizes his expertise in recruiting to serve as the founder and operator of Another8, a recruiting firm that works with developing technology companies. In addition to his responsibilities with Another8, Scott Robarge supports the research and advocacy efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Alzheimer’s Association recently issued a press release to announce that it has expanded its funding commitment and partnership with other research support organizations to advance a global initiative called Biomarkers Across Neurodegenerative Diseases (BAND), which will investigate the corresponding features of different brain-deteriorating diseases. During the new funding cycle, BAND researchers will collectively receive almost $2 million in research grant awards for projects that compare existing research on the clinical symptoms and biology of diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. This second round of BAND funding is the result of collaboration between the Alzheimer's Association, the Weston Brain Institute in Canada, Alzheimer's Research UK, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in the U.S. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s press release, the organizations hope that studying the overlap between brain-deteriorating diseases will lead to treatments that are effective for multiple conditions.

Susan G. Komen Organization Announces New Grants

Throughout his 30-year career in psychiatry, Richard Pines also contributed to a number of charitable organizations. Richard Pines is currently an active supporter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In a recent release, the Susan G. Komen organization announced that it is awarding new grants to more than 50 promising young breast cancer researchers. The approximately $16 million in new grants will fund scientists who have recently begun their research career and those who are still in training. Because federal research funding has become increasingly tight, the organization has awarded these grants to ensure that researchers can continue to found innovative breast cancer research projects. These new grants represent nearly half of the organization’s almost $35 million investment in original breast cancer research for 2014. With the remaining 2014 funds, Susan G. Komen will continue to support scientists who have already greatly contributed to breast cancer research. Funds will also be used to maintain the various partnerships and programs that further the organization’s goals.
