October 2, 2014 - Reading Nicholas Kaufmann
October 2, 2014 - Commute Day 168
Missed my train yesterday by a few seconds because the track changed. Boo. Debated getting on a Croton Harmon train, then just decided to wait. Yesterday was the release date for a new book by the husband of a colleague in my office, plus I had a $5 credit from Barnes and Noble from getting a new Nook (cracked my previous one by stuffing the laptop in the bag too hard when getting on a Citibike), so I decided to pick up one of his books of short stories. Anyway, read a bunch of those yesterday on the train ride home and liked them a lot-- Nicholas is an extremely vivid writer that unfortunately primarily works in genres I'm not particularly taken by (horror urban fantasy). There are elements of all of the stories I've read that I enjoy, but generally I wish I could take his writing style and drop it into a different genre entirely.
There is one story that I keep thinking about -- 'The Beat of Her Wings'-- there's none of the 'gross-out' elements of the other stories I've read so far, it's grounded in a beautifully explored unfaithful husband premise, then takes a wonderfully absurd fantastical turn that in retrospect is actually hinted out throughout the story. It was great. I would love to adapt it into a short film :)
7:30 - alarm. I was up too late again playing Assassin's Creed II (think I'm near the end? Just flew Da Vinci's wing-machine) and working on the Hattingen poster for Morgan.
8:14 - arrive at train station
8:17 - train departs. I read a few more of Nick's stories. Over halfway through now.
9:29 - train arrives. Geezum why is it always so late? I feel like once we're underground we travel at like 2 mph for 10 minutes.
9:36 - the two closest Citibike stands were empty, and I debated going to the 44th and 5th one, but decide to wait around a second. Sure enough, a guy pulled up right next to me and I got his bike.
Total commute this morning: 1:47
