Just started a new TV series!
It's called Sygeplejeskolen, but it's being marketed as 'New Nurses' in English. It was first broadcast in 2018, and follows the first co-ed class of nursing students at a teaching hospital in Denmark in the 1950s- very Call The Midwife but slightly different. The costumes are great, the locations they shoot on are great, and it's just a lot of fun.
Also, the main character is a dish - and served in the Danish Brigade!
I'm watching it now on Hoopla, a streaming service through my library, but it looks like it's available on MHz in the US (cable channel) and on Channel 4 in the UK.

Well, another week of health care in the news. Lots of discussions, arguments, heated debates and the occasional cordial conversation on what changes need to be made. From Obamacare to staffing ratios to violence against health care workers…. lots of news these days affecting healthcare. But what I notice is missing – where are the nurses in these conversations?? I see lots of people and analysts…

In my first year of nursing
One of my least favorite things were IV insertions. I sucked. I always blew the vein. I felt like a nuisance to my coworkers because I needed their help.
One year later and I am able to get an IV in people that even experienced RNs can’t get an IV into. I got one in an IV drug user today on my first shot. She is a very sick lady with a history of open heart surgery. She said that I was the first person that she could remember who ever got an IV in on the first try.
You may feel incompetent at the beginning but that is normal. I was the same with putting catheters in women. I’m now a straight shooter for the most part.
You will get better in time. Take every opportunity to learn from your mistakes. Watch experienced nurses do what you couldn’t do. Ask them for help. One time there was a patient who nobody on the floor could stick. I called the ED and they sent up a paramedic. They put IVs in people in moving vehicles. I literally asked him if I could watch him do it. Nursing is a career where you need to “suck up your pride.” It is somebody’s arm you are poking. It is somebody’s genitals you are trying to stick tubes in to. Don’t be afraid.
