Tesco Lotus to Launch 750 New Stores in Thailand

BANGKOK – British supermarket giant Tesco-Lotus has announced its plans to open 750 new stores in Thailand over the next three years, bringing along with it almost 10,000 jobs.

The British retail supermarket has tried and failed in many countries across the world – but Thailand has been a success story for it.

Stores in the US, China, South Korea and Japan have all shut, after former chief executive Sir Terry Leahy’s plans there failed to bear fruit, but it’s still serving more than 15 million customers every week in Thailand.

Now current chief executive Dave Lewis is expanding the chain overseas again – focusing on one country where it is winning.

“The economics of the country [Thailand] are very attractive. There is a big emerging middle class,” he explained.

Tesco – which operates under the Tesco Lotus name in the region – already has a network of about 2,000 stores across Thailand, along with online shopping platforms.

Tesco-Lotus made £4.1billion of revenue in Thailand the last financial year, making it the store’s largest market outside the UK.

The supermarket’s main competitor in the convenience market is Japanese-US business 7-Eleven – which is run locally under the CP-All brand.

Tesco boss Dave Lewis, believes that Thailand offers a huge opportunity because of its young, increasingly urban and affluent population. Tere is a big emerging middle class,’ he said.

Tesco Lotus chief executive Sompong Rungnirattisai said: “With growing urbanisation, shoppers want both convenience and a good shopping experience, without compromising quality and value for money.”

“To better suit customers, we have focused on simplification, including re-arranging space in our large stores to improve shopping experience, as well as utilisation of technology and an omni-channel platform to enhance convenience.”

He added: “Our plan is to open 750 new Express stores, while refreshing existing stores over the next three years into this proposition.

“For large stores, a space re-purposing program with new offers is already under way, with 20 hypermarkets having been repurposed. In parallel, our online business will be expanded both for our own grocery home shopping platform and through other online marketplaces.”

Updates

So friends aren’t too keen on the tsunami idea… I was thinking something tasteful and respectful, but the idea was still shot down.  *sigh*  So back to the drawing board few a new water related idea…

Got an e-mail about adding the Liverpool, UK LEGO store the other day — it’s been added.  In the process off adding it, I noticed that there’s to be a 2nd Toronto and Miami store, along with two new stores in California soon — this is exciting.

Some new parts have been showing up on the wall as well — I’ve been updating the database.  If I’ve missed anything, please let me know.

How Full is Your PaB?

One of the suggestions that have come up for iPaB has been some type of indicator of how full a wall container is… I think way back when I started this project, I had a similar idea — not only would I like to know what parts are on the PaB wall, but how plentiful are they.  So I looked for a ‘progress bar’ example in CSS, found it simple enough to implement on a web page; added a field to the database, updated the form, did a little testing and voilà!  By indicating ‘near full’, you see the a bar like (6,1); ‘near empty’ will be like (5,1); ‘quarter full’ will be like ‘(6,2); ‘half full’ the bar will be like (6,3); and ‘three quarters full’ will be like (6,4).  I might work on touch up the graphic a little, but let me know what you think.  Hopefully you’ll find is useful.

In the mean time, I’ve added two new stores, Brighton, UK and Milton Keynes, UK.

New Colors & 12 New LEGO Stores

Just a quick update: I’ve been asked to add trans-purple and dark purple to the list of available part colors; these colors are turning up on the Copenhagen, Denmark PaB wall. I ended up taking a few minutes to add all the new 2012 colors to the database as well, so now the drop down list of colors are all colors produced in 2011-2012… Granted, some of these color probably will not show up in PaB, but they’re there just in case.

According to the newest LEGO Store flyer, there will be some new stores opening up this summer.  I took a few moments to also add the 12 new stores to the database.
