DERRICK ADAMS THE "IT” ARTIST OF SUMMER 2016

Culture Club: “Floater I”
Baltimore’s very own, artist Derrick Adams, is heating things up this summer in the tri-state area with two unique solo exhibitions currently on display at Newark, New Jersey’s Gateway Project Space, titled Culture Club. Across the Hudson River, you can catch Adams additional solo exhibition, “ON”which is a variation of polychromatic mixed media collages, performances, sound pieces, and illuminated sculptures, at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Currently, he is an artist in residence at the Gateway Project Space; his exhibition showcases African Americans relaxing in the pool during the summertime, simply just being. However, the summertime activities aren’t only for the large-scale artworks, but the viewers too can join the fun with playful floaters that surround the floors of the gallery, where viewers can lay and imagine floating across the pool.
Alongside the paintings are a three-dimensional decorative table setting collage works, which have elements of the African heritage in prints, suggesting a celebration of a bloodline of generations both past and present. We admire the Culture Clubs simple gist, not everything has to have an underlying message, and the exhibitions casualty alone is genesis! Oftentimes today, African-Americans are portrayed as hostile and in volatile circumstances or overtly sexualized, so it is nice to see a different perspective.

In Red Hook, at Pioneer Works, Adams, "ON” exhibition there was so much to experience, we will not be a spoiler and giveaway the entire exhibition, but we will say, expect to see walls painted in bright colors resembling the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers bars in patterns with fabrics in bold colored prints. While braided hair wigs placed on illuminated light bulbs, set an interesting mood. Adams explained to us the idea behind it is, “luminary, and higher learning, like putting you're thinking cap on."

Opening night of "ON", we were finally able to catch up with the man himself, Derrick Adams. He wasted no time to say to us off hand, “always be skeptical.” He went on to explain, “Consumer culture is not based on authenticity,” he said passionately. “Consumers have to be more conscious of how the media and advertisement are constructed.” We were eager to learn what was the inspiration behind the depiction of women in the sculptures, he said, "it was homage to the women in his family that play the role of a matriarch." Despite, the tenacious message behind the exhibition, Adams’ optimistic attitude, was reassuring that the artist would simply like people to be conscious.
So, its summer, summer, summertime, so there is no reason why you can't get out and check out his exhibitions before it ends! Also, there will be a closing party for Derrick Adams’ show "Culture Club" Friday, July 15, 2016, at 6 - 9pm. Don’t say we didnt try to make your 2016 hot!
Derrick Adams, Culture Club, is on view from May 18 - July 15, 2016, at Gateway Project Space, 2 Gateway Center, Newark, New Jersey.
Derrick Adams, On, is on view from June 10 - July 17, 2016 at Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer Street, Brooklyn, New York
