Celebrating New Citizens

Once a year for the last four years, the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State has hosted a very special and unique program. The BPAC’s Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium becomes the location for the Western District of New York’s naturalization ceremony. This is the final step for those who have successfully completed the naturalization process through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

I, along with Provost Melanie Perreault, was honored to be asked to join others and provide remarks for this very special occasion. The official proceedings for the Western District were convened and presided over by the Honorable William M. Skretny. Fifty-five individuals from 25 countries became citizens on July 26.

Their former citizenships ranged from Canada to the Congo and from Jamaica to Germany. It was a very special event, and one that I always find extremely touching. One man from the Congo spoke of the many years it had taken him to become a citizen and the excitement he felt. I watched the smiles, hugs, and tears as individual names were called and our country’s newest citizens received their naturalization documents.

Buffalo State embraces the diversity of our global community, and thus it was a moment that tugged at the heart of all Bengals, supporters of the new citizens, and friends and family members in the room. It was a clear reminder of the many diverse cultures that make up our country.

The ceremony at the Burchfield is just one of many ways that the BPAC lives our urban-engaged mission and the Buffalo State belief that through diversity comes strength. This was yet another memorable morning for all those attending this splendid ceremony.
