Today we celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Phanourios the Newly Revealed. Saint Phanourios was unknown to us until the 1500s when excavations were taking place in Rhodes, Greece. The workers came upon an icon which the name Saint Phanourios was inscribed. Around the icon were 12 scenes depicting the life and martyrdom of the Saint, giving us all the information we know about his life. He appeared to various people healing them of diseases and performing many miracles. Because of his name (which means "the revealing one") he is often invoked in prayers when one is looking for a lost item or person. The one making the entreaty bakes a sweet cake in his name and shares the sweet with others as a sort of offering to the Saint. Through this simple dedication, the Saint more than often reveals what the faithful person is looking for. On Bright Tuesday, we celebrate the Holy Newly Revealed Martyrs Raphael, Nicholas, Irene and all those with them. For around 500 years the story of these saints was unknown until in 1959 they started appearing to various people in dreams, telling them where their relics were buried and how they were martyred. Having found their fragrant relics, a monastery was built over the site and the saints continue to perform countless miracles to this day. Although they were martyred by invading Turks on April 9, this was in fact Bright Tuesday of that year and so, their feast is kept on this day. For almost 1700 years, Saint Xenia remained unknown by hagiographers and all of Orthodoxy until she chose to reveal herself to a humble priest in the bustling city of New York in the church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Father George Nasis was in prayer when a young, beautiful girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a gentle demeanour appeared before him, introducing herself as Xenia, a martyred Saint of Christ. She related her story to him and requested he paint an icon of her, holding a cross in her hand. At first, fr. George kept this incident to himself fearing ridicule, however he could not keep this secret any longer. He related the event to his superiors and many spent long and arduous hours searching for the name Xenia in the syanxaria (lives of the saints). After a lengthy search, the Great Martyr Xenia of Kalamata was found. Her description matched exactly that of what fr. George witnessed. Refusing marriage to a pagan ruler, Xenia was imprisoned and put to death in a cruel manner. Because of her manifold miracles, Saint Xenia was officially recognised as a Saint, however her memory forgotten until late in the 20th Century. The icon of Saint Xenia still adorns the Annunciation Church in New York and this site works as a source of miracles.
