Il y a quelques années on avait découvert les montagnes de Tzoumerka et ça m’avais vraiment donné envie de revenir. J’avais constellé mon google-maps de point d’interrogations avec de beaux canyons bien équipés mais inconnus des bases de données. Première étape Vikos et son canyon monumental parmi les grands d’Europe, on est surpris de voir des rafts passer sur une rivière avec aussi peu d’eau…

Here you see the (partly-restored) portico at Epidauros, in the Pelopponese. Famed now for its great theatre, the site was a healing sanctuary with some phenomenal architecture.

Today we also celebrate the newly-revealed Martyr Xenia of Kalamata. For almost 1700 years, Saint Xenia remained unknown by hagiographers and all of Orthodoxy until she chose to reveal herself to a humble priest in the bustling city of New York in the church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Father George Nasis was in prayer when a young, beautiful girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a gentle demeanour appeared before him, introducing herself as Xenia, a martyred Saint of Christ. She related her story to him and requested he paint an icon of her, holding a cross in her hand. At first, fr. George kept this incident to himself fearing ridicule, however he could not keep this secret any longer. He related the event to his superiors and many spent long and arduous hours searching for the name Xenia in the syanxaria (lives of the saints). After a lengthy search, the Great Martyr Xenia of Kalamata was found. Her description matched exactly that of what fr. George witnessed. Refusing marriage to a pagan ruler, Xenia was imprisoned and put to death in a cruel manner. Because of her manifold miracles, Saint Xenia was officially recognised as a Saint, however her memory forgotten until late in the 20th Century. The icon of Saint Xenia still adorns the Annunciation Church in New York and this site works as a source of miracles.
