#NewTshirtAlert I recently discovered the story of the Iyoba, which translates to Queen Mother of the King. It's an actual title in the kingdom where the mother of the king is given political power and other privileges that's normally only given to the king. This particular image is a sculpture from the Benin Kingdom, which is modern day Nigeria. The first Iyoba was Queen Mother Idia who fought to establish and maintain the kingdom for her son Oba Esigie against his brother who also was up to inherit the throne. The more I read it the more it sounded like the storyline used in the Marvel Black Panther movie between T'challa and Killmonger. I'm almost certain this story inspired the movie in some way. Anyway...I think it's a strong image and a powerful story. I made this inspired by a t-shirt I saw for the Buffalo 66 movie. Had to flip it...this is also a kind of a middle finger to Vincent Gallo who I remember reading about him saying some slick racist shit about black women. I also remember him having some disparaging words for Basquiat as well. So fuck him... A lot of people don't know the Black Panther Party pioneered the free breakfast program. #NewTshirtAlert Recently discovered Mary E. Britton, read her story and made a shirt of her. She was the first licensed black doctor in Lexington, KY. She was born free in 1855, got licensed in 1902 and began to treat patients in her home because white hospitals would not treat black people. She later became an activist and journalist writing about the Jim Crow laws and fighting for better living conditions of black people and the women's movement.
