idk why i’m so embarrassed lmaooo—but i ended up watching a saberspark video on an old show i used to watch called total drama and about how…weird the show could be. which is true, the show is extremely odd sometimes. it reeks of “the writer’s undisclosed fetish” at times, if you catch my drift. which still makes me uncomfortable. but it led me down a gigantic rabbit hole and i rediscovered an old character i used to be absolutely enthralled with when i was younger and got hooked lol. i came back for ONE CHARACTER. well…a few characters
it’s literally just a parody of reality shows like Survivor, except the humor is washed—it feels like it can’t decide whether it wants to be childish or more mature. very rarely did it get a smile out of me, even as a kid. but then again humor is subjective and i’m just a bitch lmao. i like the characters. most of them at least. there’s a lot i can do with them and i like disregarding canon a bit. i think a lot of the fanbase does based on how many rewrites ive seen because the storylines are just…eh…not great. the original season was good from what i remember but the later seasons lean way more into being slapstick/showing how their characters are supposed to be based on stereotypes rather than giving them actual character traits outside of what they’re supposed to be a parody of. like there’s dawn, who i love, who’s pretty much the stereotypical “astrology mother nature” girl whose whole thing was just…mother nature. no other personality. or there’s a seth rogan parody, and a steve urkel parody. the urkel parody has personality and stuff though. it’s all parody. i just wish some of the characters had substance beyond what stereotype they’re supposed to portray. this is more of an issue in the later seasons though, i think they just stopped caring at some point. i’m gonna make a rewrite i think. dig what i can from their personalities to flesh em out a bit
i especially like this one character, his name’s mike. i used to be obsessed with that guy when i first watched the show and completely rekindled my love for him after slipping down the old rabbit hole, lmao. he’s gotten a lot of criticism because he canonically has DID and the show did a pretty…not great job with portraying it (from what i’ve read from people who actually have the disorder—i don’t have it so i don’t think i can be the spokesperson for what’s accurate/controversial and what’s not, and im not gonna sit here and pretend im the messiah of all disability rep but i’ve been trying to find people’s opinions so i can portray him and his DID correctly. if im gonna make content with him i obviously wanna do it respectfully). granted the show introduced his character in like 2012/2013, so a lot of what they’ve said and done with him is outdated since i don’t think there was as much known about it 14 years ago. so there’s some grace to be given. but i love his character—at least in the earlier seasons, so i ignore the later seasons. there’s a lot you can do with him. he doesn’t have much lore, but he surprisingly has a lot of personality outside of just the “””parody””” (for lack of better wording) that the writers assigned him. so it’s not like i don’t have a lot to work with. i have a lot of favorites but he’s been my favorite since i first watched the season he was in like 7ish years ago. i’ve seen some people argue all the characters are based on stereotypes, so people should take him in stride—and they are. but i dunno…i think he was extra controversial, and i can understand why. it’s really tedious to make parody of sensitive subjects without crossing several lines. it was back then and it is nowadays. despite the controversy surrounding his character, i like him a lot. he’s neat. i do wanna rewrite him a bit. we’ll see.
anyway yeah. that’s what’s been on the brain lately lol—it’s not that interesting, some may argue childish but whatever. the outsiders has the same demographic as TD in my opinion so… i like it and its nostalgic i guess. i refuse to watch the reboot. absolutely refuse to watch the reboot. you can’t beat the OG. i saw people review it and i have no interest at all. idk, maybe i’ll keep posting about the outsiders but im just in a MOOD okay/silly
