I went to Riverdale with my friend Jaz to see Colin Kaepernick after his workout. Eight NFL teams were represented at the event at Charles Drew High School. Security only allowed reporters to sit in the stands, but dozens of people lined the fence outside the school’s stadium to meet Kaepernick and his girlfriend, Nessa Diab. Many brought their own shirts, including one with the word “KAP” in a shield similar to that of the NFL. Kaepernick’s frat brothers from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated were also in attendance.

Kaepernick made sure to sign as many autographs as possible across the fence; however, he declined to sign official NFL footballs and sports apparel that was not Nike. The Kaepernick team photographer was present to capture the moment.

The workout has sparked debate, from Jay-Z to Eric Reid and Stephen A. Smith, but here is what we know for sure:

The NFL set up a workout for Kaepernick to occur on a Saturday, rather than a typical Tuesday workout for free agents. Though the practice was scheduled to occur in Flowery Branch, home to the practice facility of the Atlanta Falcons, Kaepernick and his team decided to move the workout on the opposite side of town to assure transparency, as shown in this statement.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL declined to allow media and cameras at the Flowery Branch location. ESPN’s Howard Bryant further reported that there was no notice of who Kaep’s receivers would be, and only the NFL would have video access to send to all its teams. “The fear was a 60-pass program might be edited down to his worst throws,” Bryant tweeted.

The NFL also asked Kaep to sign a waiver that allows loopholes for collusion. Pro Football Talk breaks down the waiver here. Kaepernick’s lawyers proposed an amended version of the waiver to the NFL; Sports Illustrated discusses the difference among the waivers here.

There is also controversy swirling around Nike. Though there is speculation that Nike wanted to film the workout for their new commercial, New York Times reporter Kevin Draper stated that “Nike did not have a camera crew on the ground in Atlanta and had no plans to use footage from Kaepernick’s workout,” according to a Nike spokesman. Senior Yahoo reporter Charles Robinson further stated that Nike is trying to get the NFL to retract that statement. Kaep does have a pair of Air Force 1s releasing soon, but it’s unclear if Nike wanted to film the workout in relation to the shoes.

Kaepernick and the receivers he flew in at his own expense completed the workout at Charles Drew High School. Eight of 24 scheduled team representatives, including the Chiefs, Jets, and Eagles, watched the workout. Eric Reid was also in attendance before his game against the Falcons in Charlotte. Kaep even told scouts to tell their owners to “stop being scared.” After signing autographs, Kaep held a press conference with media attendees.
