Around the Horn Segment
The Out of Bounds segment today obviously was going to cover Michael Sam and his journey into the NFL. He was drafted in the 7th round by the Rams only 7 picks away from the Mr. Irrelevant pick. Now, Sam was projected to be around a 3rd round pick until he came out before the NFL Drafting saying he was gay. There is nothing wrong with him coming out as being gay. It did however hurt his draft stock. The NFL is not ready for an openly gay athlete to play in the sport. They have had quite a few gay players, all who came out years after their career. He is the first to do this and thus go through all of the hardships for fellow players to endure at a later date.
Classified as an inbetweener, Sam was SEC Defensive Player of the year last year tallying up 11.5 sacks, 31 solo tackles, and 19 tackles for a loss. Coming from the SEC, those are some pretty good stats. His size leads me to believe he will probably play inside linebacker and special teams. Now I believe he is going to give 120% of his effort to the team that he plays for and I wish him all the best. I do worry that he will even make the Rams let alone have a long career in the NFL. Only so many cities could possibly handle the drama of an openly gay athlete? Not that any city wouldn't want it I'm just saying tabloids and sports writers could have a field day in certain cities.
Around the horn touched on him being drafted, and the "kiss" on camera after he answered the phone and emotionally embraced his significant other. What a touching story right? I completely agree. He can do whatever he wants to, he earned it. Most of the time we see guys kissing their girlfriends on draft day and nobody complains right? Do we complain when two girls are kissing during a beer commercial? NOOOO. So why complain about this just because it is different? Sure they didn't have to show it 200 times on ESPN but I am sure the reason they did is to show us that this is hear to stay. It is not going to disappear anytime soon.
