New Gods #7 thoughts. Spoilers below.
I was actually kind of disappointed that Metron would be leaving the story when he told Akala they've got things to figure out on their own and he was peacing out to bigger and better things. Like his job there was done. And it kinda was, he nudged things enough that everyone got to earth. But he wasn't leaving the story at all! He was just going down the street 😂
It's entertaining to see DeSaad freaking the fuck out over Metron being like :3 hey bestie. It's reminiscent of Byrne's run but of course Metron is so much more coy in this. But aside from that, I'm waiting for the Apokolips crowd to do anything interesting. They're nowhere near the main focus of the story, but seeing Max meet up with them, and Metron having also wanted them on earth is like okay lets see where this goes.
Was talking about this elsewhere, but I'm actually very torn on Metron's portrayal. On one hand, Im a Kirby purist and I know that. On the other hand, I very much enjoy the new, slightly different takes on the characters and lore, it's different but tonally still fits for the most part. On the other other hand, this is by far the most heavy handed orchestration Metron has done so I'm like but does it fit? Would he actually do that? And on the other other other hand bc im like idk an octopus or something, with a new type of god in play maybe he would go to these lengths just to ensure his own way of life can continue in the face of huge universe-shifting change. Wait octopus doesnt have hands. You know what i mean.
And of course there's Lightray's death, whatever will happen with the Racer on earth, the Source's handling of what becomes of Lightray, and his eventual return into the story at hopefully some crucial time where he saves the day. Can't wait to see that play out. But in the meanwhile we got the anticipated Orion reaction to the news. I know with such a packed issue they can't spend all too many panels on it, but it's not just lightrion fanservice, its informative to Orions character and what he is or isn't valuing and internalizing. Their relationship is part of the narrative, and Orion went from a hulking beast ready to kill a child to a quiet and pained god gentle enough for a tiny child to sit with in silence (he's still hulking tho and we love him for that). That was such a great moment, i think it's one of the handful of highlights from the run so far. Very satisfying.
And so this issue was very much about setting the stage for act 2. I dont know how many issues this full story will be or if its a true ongoing or what. But are we halfway through? And how does this play into the larger All In and Absolute Universe stuff? Early on Ram V said it sits sort of in the middle of the two, and that the gods don't necessarily know there are multiple universes at play. Im making a wary prediction that possibly some characters will be part of one universe or the other and that will be a big reveal.
Okay it's been a while since I've really done a rundown of my own thoughts on these bc I like to save them for the group read along, then put them in the post to Ram and the others. But this one had so much to think about that I couldn't not mull through it here. Im so, so looking forward to the next one.
Omg and whats up w Serifan???! Okay okay that's all for now lol.
