NGC 2403

NGC 2403 is a spiral galaxy located about 10 million light years away towards the constellation Camelopardalis, the Giraffe. It is about 50,000 light years across. The galaxy contains a high number of HII regions, which are areas of star formation with a high amount of ionized hydrogen gas, glowing a typical red in visible light.

These regions can form massive, hot stars, that quickly burn through their fuel. In 2004, NGC 2403 hosted one of the brightest supernovas of modern times, as one of its massive stars spectacularly died. NGC 2403, with its abundance of star forming regions, is fairly similar to another famous galaxy, M33 or the Triangulum Galaxy.

NGC 2403

Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2403 resides in the constellation Camelopardalis the Giraffe. NGC 2403 is one of the sky’s brightest galaxies, shining with a magnitude of 8.5. It’s large, however, so that brightness spreads over an area defined by the galaxy’s 25.5' by 13' dimensions. Its size, by the way, makes NGC 2403’s area 47 percent as large as that of the Full Moon.
