My Community Internship Experience with TRY NGO: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Introduction
Community service gives students an opportunity to understand society beyond textbooks. During my Community Internship with TRY NGO, I had the privilege of working with underprivileged children and participating in educational as well as awareness-based activities. The experience helped me understand the importance of education, communication, hygiene, and empathy while contributing to the overall development of children.
My Role During the Internship
As an intern, I participated in a variety of learning activities designed for children. My responsibilities included conducting General Knowledge quizzes, organizing fun learning games, teaching hygiene practices, encouraging creativity through drawing and colouring sessions, and facilitating communication and confidence-building activities.
I also conducted problem-solving and decision-making exercises that encouraged children to think independently and participate actively. Every activity was planned to make learning enjoyable while developing important life skills.
What I Learned
One of the biggest lessons I learned was that education is much more than teaching subjects. Children learn best when education is interactive and engaging.
The hygiene awareness sessions and demonstrations of proper handwashing techniques showed me how small habits can create a lasting impact on children's health. Similarly, creative activities such as drawing and painting encouraged self-expression and boosted the confidence of the participants.
Conducting General Knowledge quizzes and communication activities also improved my own public speaking, leadership, and teamwork skills.
The Impact of the Internship
Working directly with children allowed me to see how simple educational activities can positively influence their confidence and curiosity.
The children actively participated in games, discussions, and creative exercises. Many who were initially shy gradually became more comfortable answering questions and expressing their ideas.
The experience also taught me patience, adaptability, and the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment where every child feels encouraged to participate.
How This Internship Changed My Perspective
Before joining the internship, I believed social work mainly involved providing resources. However, my experience with TRY NGO helped me realize that meaningful social work is also about empowering communities through education, awareness, and continuous support.
As a UX Design student, I also understood how user-centred thinking applies to community work. Every activity needed to be designed according to the children's age, learning level, and interests to ensure maximum participation and engagement.
This internship strengthened my communication skills, leadership qualities, and sense of social responsibility. It inspired me to contribute more towards community development in the future.
Conclusion
My Community Internship at TRY NGO has been one of the most valuable learning experiences of my academic journey. It combined education, creativity, awareness, and social service while helping me grow both personally and professionally.
I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to children's learning and development, and I look forward to participating in similar social initiatives in the future.
